Take a Phased Approach for a Better EUC Platform

You need to look at what you have today, plan carefully so you won't disrupt workforce productivity. By re-investing the savings from simplification, your IT projects can be self-funding. Optimizing existing investments while leveraging new technologies in phases will let you systematically break free of the vicious cycle.

VMware recommends these major phases for the journey to better end-user computing.

First, Improve What You Have with Virtual Desktops and Application Virtualization

Windows applications and desktops will be around for many years. The first phase of the journey must be to simplify these components by virtualizing as many of them as you can with VMware View and VMware ThinApp. Use OS migrations, desktop refresh, M&A and campus moves to transform desktops into centrally managed services. The incremental operational savings can then be reinvested in adopting new technologies.

Then, Embrace the Cloud for New Applications

Next, embrace the cloud as a platform for new applications. VMware Horizon lets you manage application services inside or outside the enterprise through your current policies and at a higher level of control than with traditional PCs. With Horizon Manager in place, organizations can move to the cloud at their own pace, depending on the availability of budget and resources. Each application moved to the cloud will deliver further cost reductions for the desktop and increasing marginal returns.

Finally, Connect and Communicate across Platforms and Devices for Maximum Mobility

The final phase uses new application and data services for greater workforce freedom, productivity and IT manageability. VMware Horizon Mobile will deliver an IT controlled environment to a user’s mobile phone. Project AppBlast will enable device and platform independent delivery of legacy applications. Project Octopus will free information from devices, moving it to a centrally controlled service, readily available for sharing. New application services like VMware Zimbra, Socialcast and SlideRocket allow users to connect, communicate and collaborate with each other. With the adoption of these next generation capabilities, the role of the PC will shrink, first becoming a service and then eventually being retired completely.
