City of Melrose

Melrose IT leaders are reducing their total costs of supporting applications by embracing hybrid cloud computing built on VMware to become a specialized managed-services provider.

"It’s not that big of a stretch to get to that point where you say, 'I can do this for another city or town.' That was actually the thought process several years ago, as we started to do our own internal consolidation. The idea was that if we do it for ourselves, why can’t we do it for others."

— Jorge Pazos, Chief Information Officer in the City of Melrose

City of Pitt Meadows

City University of Hong Kong

To deliver instant access to learning applications within any laboratory across its six academic departments, the City University of Hong Kong College of Business migrated its desktops to VMware Horizon View and deployed thin clients within its new laboratories. As a result, the University was able to deliver flexible learning spaces for all academic disciplines, decrease IT maintenance of desktops, develop new focus on service delivery to support academic performance and reduce total cost of ownership of their desktop infrastructure.

"Our academic staff realised that the thin clients with the virtual desktops in the new laboratories switch on and operate instantly which means they can focus on teaching and learning and not on the technology."

— Adams Chan, Systems Manager, College of Business

The IT team is using vCloud Air Dedicated Cloud to extend their own data center, get multiple virtual centers for each of the business units and have the ability to move their workloads especially key apps on premises and off premises as they choose. VMware cloud has helped them focus IT on delivering applications that the business and their patients need. It has changed how the companies think about expanding the business to be more than just 8 which is a solid IT foundation for future growth.

"VMware vCloud Air is very important to us right now. With us being new in the market and trying to get into the market space very quickly, vCloud Air provides us the ability to stand up environments very quickly. VMware vCloud Air gives us the ability just to be able to snapshot our environment, roll it out and instead of months or weeks of having to build equipment, we can be live in 2-3 days with the environment we have currently built. To the customers the vCloud Air is important to them, because from the time we go from an RFP to implementation most of the turn-around are less than a month.”

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi

Enhancing patient experience through technology

Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi went into construction in March 2010 and is scheduled for completion in 2015. The hospital’s management wanted to provide a best-in-class digital environment for all patients in order to give them the best experience possible and to ensure their stay is a comfortable as possible from every aspect.

The IT team naturally has to play a key part in this vision and, as a result, deployed vCloud Automation Center for improved managed and oversight of its infrastructure. Thanks to VMware, the time it takes to deliver applications to the hospital will be reduced from two weeks to 15 minutes – or by 70% - due to the automation capabilities of VMware’s solution.

“The key to our IT strategy when we began our journey here was starting with private cloud and growing to a hybrid cloud or a software-defined datacentre. I think that the real drivers for that were increased agility and achieving better time to market for our customers, whether that’s physicians who may need data for research, of the ability for us to rapidly upgrade and enhance products, enabling new services.”

— Mike Reagin, Chief Information Officer, Cleveland Clinic Abu Dhabi

— Whitney Kuszmaul, IT Director, The Cleveland Indians

Cloud Carib

Cloud Carib Propels Performance, Productivity and Growth with VMware Hyperconverged Solutions

Cloud Carib was rapidly growing its customer base as a cloud service provider (CSP) and was eyeing new markets. The company had to increase storage capacity and performance—but at a lower cost and with less complexity. Continuing to add external storage was unsustainable. When Cloud Carib converted to VMware Hyperconverged Infrastructure solutions built on VMware Virtual SAN™, the company reined in the costs and complexity of expanding, and accelerated its growth with new services and revenue.

“Our customers are surprised by the speed and responsiveness of their applications. Cloud Carib now has the ability to host any demanding application a customer wants to run.”

Cloud Computing at SAIC

Cloud Computing at SAIC

Science Applications International Corporation (SAIC), based in McLean, Virginia, provides information technology, system integration, and e-business solutions worldwide. These solutions include big data and analytics, cloud computing, cybersecurity, IT managed services, networks and communications, and software and mobility services. SAIC’s primary customer is the United States government, but its 13,000 employees also deliver systems engineering and integration offerings to large-scale government and commercial projects across the globe.

What is unique about SAIC is their dedication to delivering quality mission-oriented technical services and solutions and to contributing to the security of our nation and the well-being of our local communities. They not only believe high ethical standards are essential to achieving individual and corporate goals but they can also apply their core values to all their interactions with their customers, fellow employees, suppliers and subcontractors, neighbors, and stockholders.

vCloud Air represents an opportunity to create synergies between existing vSphere deployments and the investments SAIC has already made in operational procedures. For the company, the solution is familiar, less expensive and faster to deploy than other cloud service provider options—all of which leads to increased availability of services for SAIC clients and higher customer satisfaction.

The addition of VMware vCloud Government Services provided by Carpathia makes it easier to address security concerns while offering hybrid cloud services to public sector clients. SAIC sees vCloud Government Services as being almost the perfect platform for delivering enterprise IT that includes cloud but also recognizes that there’s a much broader set of services that have to be delivered in the IT portfolio.

"At SAIC, we use vCloud Air because we already have a large investment in vSphere technology. It was very straight forward for us to migrate our IT Services from our existing virtualization environment into a vCloud Air Platform. Additionally, we have a large base of trained personnel on VMWare Management technologies making it very easy for us to integrate our technology with VMWare's Cloud Service Provider offerings known as vCloud Air."

"SAIC sees vCloud Government Services as being a very viable Cloud Services Platforms for the entire US Government. It's one of the reasons we are heavily investing in becoming very technically proficient and building solutions on top of it. The Federal App Accredited Cloud Provider environment that VMWare offers provides a migration path for vSphere users today which is a large portion of our customer base that makes it straight forward to integrate with existing management solutions and to migrate workloads back and forth between that Fed App Accredited Community Cloud and their existing private side Cloud environment."

— Coby Holloway, VP, Cloud Computing & Business Transformation, SAIC

Cognizant in India brings simplicity and agility to its IT life

Cognizant (NASDAQ: CTSH) is a leading provider of information technology, consulting, and business process outsourcing services, dedicated to helping the world’s leading companies build stronger businesses. When assessing Cognizant’s IT environment, it was clear from the results that it was growing at an unsustainable pace. The company had several data centers, packed with physical servers, storage, and networking elements. The company needed to deliver a more agile IT environment, to drive innovation and next-generation cloud services. To achieve this, Cognizant chose to partner with VMware to offer Infrastructure as a Service (IaaS) to internal customers. Post virtualization, the business has seen server utilization rates double to 80 percent, a reduction in physical server numbers, and a defined roadmap for software-defined data center adoption.

“Our plan is to build our IT around a SDDC enabled by leveraging our partnership with VMware. Short-term goals include moving to virtualized storage and virtualized networking. Our relationship with VMware will continue to bring value to the Cognizant business.”

— P.R.Devaraj, Global Head-Network and Systems Services, Cognizant
