I have to be honest, my favorite thing about the VMware Fusion 2.0 Beta 1 is the mulitple monitor support. I love the fact that i can drag my unity Windows between my MacBook Pro and my Cinema display. Love it!

Just installed--it looks great! I like the new, more informative icons that display different devices in the single window mode!

VMware tools are installing...rebooting...centered between both monitors..vmware tools still out of date--I'll have to uninstall and reinstall...nope, they're back and ready...window updating looks slower.

Trying to enter unity mode gives a message about the screen size..but now it's back and it looks great--unity on both monitors. Excellent.
Snappier than before the screen size was uptated too.

On entering unity the taskbar jumped to monitor one, but now I dragged it back to where it belongs (right side monitor 2).

OK, one more test: "Can you here me? Yes, Dragon NaturallySpeaking works well in fusion version 2 beta. And, it works in unity on the other monitor." Dictated in dragonpad (VM), cut and pasted here.

NICE WORK GUYS!

PS The full screen using both monitors is also very nice. BTW I'm using two different size monitors, and it all works well.
The task bar insists on jumping to the first monitor when I switch to unity. A small buglet.
XP-64 works well too.
In both xp and xp-64 the first switch to unity was weird--didn't work well on both monitors. On reboot, each VM worked perfectly on both monitors.
Now the big test-- xp and xp-64 running in different unity windows...Too much. Both VMs work perfectly in unity windows...not that I'll ever need this, but it works anyway.

It's more like Thing(s)!

New Library format, resizable! and resizeable thumbnail, woo hoo!
Import... button right on the Boot Camp partition entry in the Library (nice!!!)
Full screen suspend/resume and persistence (sweet!)
Adding an existing virtual hard disk!!!!
Multiple screens (can't try this until tomorrow, but the YouTube video rocks)
Seamless upgrade from Fusion 1.x
...so far.

Thanks for your feedback, Matthew!

The taskbar problem is a tricky one. Do you want it:

1) Where your Mac menu bar is
2) Where your Mac dock is
3) Somewhere else

My preference is to have the windows taskbar to persist in the place I put it last. For example, I like having vertical task bars, with the windows taskbar on the right edge of the right monitor, while the mac dock is vertical on the left edge of the left monitor. These places take the least relative screen space, as the horizontal pixels >> vertical, and I like reading full text pages on screen. It also gives me clear partitioning of the machines.

When I ran both xp and x64, I left the x64 on the right monitor, right edge, and xp taskbar on the left monitor right edge...

I"ll share two, my favorite and least favorite.

Favorite thing: I love that I no longer have to go to my virtual machines folder to remove old VMs! I've wanted that for a while now.

My least favorite thing: The new settings layout. It's going to be a real pain having to click "show all" to go back to the categories when you have to change multiple settings on a VM. I much prefer the previous layout to the new one. But, that's just me :-)

The thinking was that it's probably more common to want to glance at all the settings rather than making mass changes. How often do you do this, and for what purpose?

Still, it seemed like the other layout was more efficient than the current one. I understand the desire to emulate a more "mac-like" experience, but at the cost of usability, I don't see the benefit of the new layout.

You're right, it's not that often that a setting needs to be changed once set, but look at the way you phrased it: To be able glance at all the settings - you see none in the new view style without first clicking on a category, then you see only what is contained within that category. So say you wanted to quickly check the settings, you'd have to click "show all" every time in between changing from one to the next, whereas in the previous layout, you could simply click straight down the list of configurable options and be done with it.

Below each of the categories, I see a line of gray text that's a short description of the setting. Is this not the case for you?

I see what you're talking about, now. I didn't notice that at first glance, I just remembered seeing the images there and nothing else. That changes everything! I think I owe an apology for skimming over that so quickly.

Thanks for pointing this out :-)

I vote for the new setting layout. It's not cumbersome (the old one required multiple clicks to change things...)

Ditto.

Is it me, or is disk access faster? I've not benchmarked anything, but It's feeling faster in a WinXP guest VM. It may be an illusion as I also upgraded an app within the VM.

I haven't even installed Fusion yet; I just got here via a tip on the Parallels forum. But I already have a favorite thing:

My favorite thing about the VMWare Fusion 2.0 Beta 1 is the thoughtful, detailed, lightning-quick responses (and solutions!) from VMWare employees and other users.

This could be cool.

I'm glad I kept my Ubuntu 7.10 Gusty Gibbon VM around, Linux Unity in 2.0 beta 1 works!
