How VMware vCenter Operations Management Suite Works
VMware makes it easier for you to gain comprehensive visibility into your infrastructure health, and applications performance and health, reclaim over-provisioned capacity and enable compliance with IT policies and regulatory requirements.
You can deploy the vCenter Operations Manager virtual appliance in about 15 minutes so it’s fast and easy to get started. Deploy more components of the Suite to take full advantage of the operations dashboards, performance analytics, capacity optimization, change and configuration management, application discovery and cost metering capabilities.
VMware vCenter Operations is built on an open and extensible platform so you can manage virtual and physical environments and even virtual machines running on other hypervisors and public clouds, like Amazon, with a single solution.
With vCenter Operations Management Suite you can:
An operations dashboard is supposed to tell you what is really happening in your environment, not overwhelm you with low-level metrics. This is why vCenter Operations dashboards show a new kind of super metrics for Health, Risk and Efficiency so you can focus on problem areas that require your immediate attention. Click to drill deeper into applications, clusters and individual VMs and data stores. Even experienced VI admins start to "see" areas for improvement in their environment. You can also customize dashboards any way you like and provide role-based access to enable better collaboration with your peers and other teams. Spend less time monitoring and more time optimizing. This is how dashboards are supposed to work for the cloud.
Proactive Smart Alerts
Traditional monitoring tools use static thresholds to alert you of every possible CPU or memory level being crossed. In fast changing virtual environments, these alerts could be false positives and not trigger when they should. vCenter Operations is different because it learns the behavior of your environment and adjusts thresholds dynamically. As a result, you get about 10-times fewer alerts, yet they're more meaningful and help detect bottlenecks, capacity shortfalls or compliance risks before they lead to an incident and end users are impacted. Best of all, you also see the root cause of an issue by correlating application and infrastructure behavior. No alert storms. No fire drills. No drama.
Intelligent Groups and Policies
With intelligent groups you can structure your operations views the way you want to see them, by application, by department, by name or tag, by configuration type or any other way you like. Group membership is dynamic; meaning a new VM or object matching the group policy in the environment will be added or removed automatically. You can also define specific health, risk and capacity thresholds, alert types and notifications, business hours and many other configuration settings at a group level to prioritize operational activities for business critical applications, production workloads or business units. Being aligned with the business has never been this easy.
Open and Extensible
If you're managing your virtual infrastructure with vCenter Operations, what about remaining physical servers, or when you have virtual machines running on other hypervisors or public clouds like Amazon? VMware can help. vCenter Operations monitors physical servers, operating systems, databases and application servers from Microsoft and Oracle so you can manage all your VMs, servers and applications with a single solution, regardless of where they run. You can also check configuration status and enforce compliance rules on virtual machines running on Xen or Hyper-V. With vCenter Operations you get comprehensive operations management to help you get most out of vSphere and the hybrid cloud.
Enable Quality of Service for Infrastructure and Applications
Discover and Monitor Applications
Virtual machines shouldn't be managed like black boxes. You need to know what applications, databases and web servers run on your virtual infrastructure so you can provide disaster recovery protection, backup, security and compliance for all application components, business critical or not. vCenter Operations automatically discovers, catalogs and visualizes application dependencies and monitors their performance. Monitoring of Windows OS and Microsoft SQL Server, Oracle Databases and many other middleware technologies give you insights into the correlation of application and infrastructure performance. You can also "BYOMT" - Bring Your Own Monitoring Tools and integrate them with vCenter Operations.
Detect When Changes Impact Performance
Virtual infrastructure enables a much higher rate of change so IT can respond more quickly to business needs. This is one of the key advantages of virtualization over physical environments but change must be managed carefully. vCenter Operations enables insight and visibility into configuration changes both in the vSphere infrastructure as well as the guest OS. You can check for unapproved drift, harden the infrastructure based on security guidelines and enforce configuration standards by rolling back unauthorized changes. Even better, can you see when changes start to impact performance, taking root cause analysis to the next level? By looking at application dependencies you can assess the impact of potential changes before committing to them.
Advice and Recommendations
VMware makes it easy to not only see what is happening in your infrastructure but also what you should do about it and why. Rather than trying to understand the meaning of low-level metrics, we have introduced new concepts for usage, entitlement and demand for resources that simplify vSphere management. You can also pull up recommendations based on VMware best practices on how to best deal with situations. It’s like having an expert in your back pocket.
Automated Workflow Triggers
vCenter Operations is fully integrated with vCenter Orchestrator so you can leverage more of what you already have. Automated workflow triggers let you associate workflows created in vCenter Orchestrator with vCenter Operations alerts. For example, these workflows can be used to automatically delete old VM snapshots when available capacity falls below a critical threshold or to add resources when workload demands are rising above normal. You’re always in control and can customize workflows with simple drag and drop operations. With vCenter Operations you can finally pull the trigger on automation.
Enable Operational Compliance
Operational compliance views enable you to proactively enforce configuration standards, detect configuration drift early and automatically remediate against violations of IT policies. You can also harden the infrastructure for security and regulatory requirements. Preparing for and responding to audit is no longer a scary and time consuming process because with automated reporting you can pinpoint critical areas with ease. Compliance views are tightly integrated with the operations dashboard for comprehensive visibility into health, risk and efficiency of infrastructure and applications.
Right-size and Reclaim Capacity
Go beyond basic server consolidation and right-size your virtual machines. 90% of all virtual machines are over-provisioned but they don’t need to be. With vCenter Operations you can see the configured amount of CPU, memory and disk and the recommended amount of resources to meet your workload demands. You’ll be surprised to find out how much you can reclaim – as much as 25% or 30% in many instances. Use the “What if” scenarios to model resource consumption of upcoming projects so you can decide if you need to buy or defer hardware purchases. Capacity management with vCenter Operations has never been this easy.
Automate Cost Metering
No one likes to work for free, and why should you? But how do you demonstrate the value of the resources and services you provide to the business? vCenter Operations provides integrated cost metering and reporting so you can track the value of resources that are being consumed. Whether you charge for infrastructure services is up to you, but now you can have a business conversation about the cost of resources requested compared to what is really needed. Best of all, cost metering data can be fed to VMware’s IT Business Management Suite to enable decision support for the CIO and CFO. With VMware, you can run IT like a business.
