VMmark is a free tool that hardware vendors, virtualization software vendors and other organizations use to measure the performance and scalability of applications running in virtualized environments. Get an accurate measurement of your virtual datacenter performance with VMmark® , the industry's first virtualization platform benchmark for x86-based computers. VMmark enables users to:
- Measure virtual datacenter performance accurately and reliably
- View & compare the performance of different hardware and virtualization platforms
For the previous version go to: VMmark Version 1
VMmark 2.x System Requirements
Here is the minimum hardware setup you need in order to benchmark virtualization platforms with VMmark 2.x:
- A 2-host cluster (homogeneous systems not required), with the following:
- 4 logical CPUs per server
- 27 GB of memory
- 320 GB of shared storage
- vMotion compatible servers
- vCenter Server installed on a separate, dedicated server
One client system per tile, each with:
- Sufficient CPU resources to support all necessary workloads without limiting performance (recommended minimum: two CPU cores)
- 4-GB of RAM
- 15-GB of available local disk space
Note: One client per test environment must be a native system; the other clients can be either native or virtual.
Operating systems:
- Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition, 64-bit
- Microsoft Windows Server 2003 SP2 Enterprise Edition, 32-bit
- SUSE Linux Enterprise Server 11, 64-bit
Applications:
- Microsoft Exchange 2007
- Olio (web and DB) and its required components
- DVD Store 2 (web and DB) and its required components
Each VMmark 2.x tile requires a client machine. These client machines run Microsoft Windows Server 2003 SP2 Enterprise Edition (32-bit) with the following applications:
- VMmark 2.x harness
- STAF framework and STAX execution engine
- LoadGen
- Microsoft Outlook 2007 (standalone or included in Microsoft Office 2007)
- Microsoft Exchange 2007 management tools
- Cygwin
- A Java JDK
- Rain Workload Toolkit
VMmark 2.x is a free tool, however some of the 3rd party software required to run VMmark 2.x may require a license. The following list summarizes which software is free, which is available in no-cost evaluation versions, and which requires paid licenses.
You can download the following free software packages from the Web:
- Cygwin environment
- STAF/STAX software
- Olio
- DVD Store 2
- Java
- VMware VMmark 2.x Harness
You can download evaluation versions of the following software packages from the
Web:
- SLES 11 Linux (64-bit)
- tc Server
- Microsoft Outlook 2007 (standalone or included in Microsoft Office 2007)
You must purchase licenses for the following software packages if you do not already own them:
- Microsoft Windows Server 2003 SP2 Enterprise Edition (32-bit) - 2 copies per tile
- Microsoft Windows Server 2008 Enterprise Edition (64-bit) - 1 copy per tile.
- Microsoft Exchange Server 2007 Enterprise Edition. This is available as part of the Microsoft Developer's Network (MSDN) Universal subscription.
Consult the VMmark 2.x Benchmarking Guide for the complete list of hardware and software requirements.
