VMware announced on October 15, 2013, that it had acquired Desktone. Privately held and headquartered in Lexington, MA, Desktone pioneered Desktops as a Service (DaaS), delivering desktops and applications as a cloud service. Desktone provides a desktop virtualization software platform that enables the deployment of Windows desktops and applications from the cloud to any user, anywhere, on any device. Built from the ground up for cloud delivery and service providers to offer DaaS, the Desktone platform was selected by the world’s largest cloud providers including Dell, Fujitsu, NEC, Dimension Data, and Navisite.

Effective February 3, 2014, VMware Horizon™ DaaS® (formerly known as Desktone) sales and technical support transitioned to VMware standard systems, processes and access points.
