What is VMware Player Plus?
What does it cost?
VMware Player Plus is available for commercial use as a standalone product or as part of
VMware Fusion Professional. VMware Fusion Professional provides a commercial license that can be used with VMware Fusion Professional on the Mac or with VMware Player Plus on Windows or Linux.
Can I still use VMware Player for free?
VMware Player is free for personal non-commercial use. If you would like to learn about Virtual Machines or use them at home you are welcome to use VMware Player for Free. Students and Faculty of accredited educational institutions can use VMware Player for free if they are members of the VMware Academic Program.
Are there guidelines for using VMware Player for personal use?
Yes. Please refer to the VMware Player End-User License Agreement (EULA) for using VMware Player according to VMware design and licensing guidelines.

Can I access VMware Player Plus documentation online for free?
Yes, both English and Japanese language versions are available for download in electronic format from the VMware Player documentation website.
How does VMware Player (Plus) work?
VMware Player installs like a standard desktop application. Once installed, VMware Player runs virtual machines in a separate window. VMware Player includes features that enable users to create and configure their own virtual machines for optimal performance and access any devices connected to their PC.
What can I do with VMware Player?
Use VMware Player to create, run, evaluate, and share software running in virtual machines:
- Create: Use VMware Player to create virtual machines with the latest 32-bit and 64-bit Windows and Linux operating systems. With Easy Install it’s easier than installing them directly on your PC.
- Run: VMware Player can be used by anyone to run virtual machines on a Windows or Linux PC. VMware Player makes it quick and easy to take advantage of the security, flexibility, and portability of virtual machines.
- Evaluate: VMware Player is ideal for safely evaluating software distributed as a virtual appliance. Virtual appliances are pre-built, pre-configured and ready-to-run enterprise software applications packaged along with an operating system in a virtual machine. With VMware Player, anyone can quickly and easily experience the benefits of preconfigured products without any installation or configuration hassles. What is the difference between VMware Player Plus and VMware Player?
The licensed version of VMware Player is called VMware Player Plus. VMware Player Plus and VMware Player are the same download, but entering a license key entitles the users to additional benefits:
- VMware Player Plus is designed to be used commercially. It is licensed for use by employees, training organizations, contractors and can be transferred to partners or potential customers.
- VMware Player Plus supports restricted virtual Machines created by VMware Fusion Professional or VMware Workstation. VMware Player Plus better supports mass deployments to thousands of users including installation options and custom configuration settings to run unattended installs using system configuration software and hide unwanted features.
- Per-incident support offerings are available to VMware Player Plus customers.
What are the minimum PC requirements to install and use VMware Player or VMware Player Plus?
For a typical host system, we recommend that you have a 1 GHz or faster processor (2GHz recommended) and 1GB RAM minimum (2GB RAM recommended). You must have enough memory to run the host operating system, plus the memory required for each guest operating system and for applications on the host and guest. See your guest operating system and application documentation for their memory requirements. VMware Player requires approximately 150MB of disk space to install the application. How does VMware Player and VMware Player Plus compare to VMware Workstation?
VMware Player Plus enables you to quickly and easily create and run virtual machines. The VMware Player user interface is designed to be as easy to use as possible. It is intended for people who need to run virtual machines, typically provided to them by their IT organization, system administrator, instructor, software supplier etc.
VMware Workstation is much more advanced and comes with powerful features including snapshots, cloning, remote connections to vSphere, sharing VMs, advanced Virtual Machines settings and much more. Workstation is designed to be used by technical professionals such as developers, quality assurance engineers, systems engineers, IT administrators, technical support representatives, trainers, etc.
Can VMware Player Plus run restricted virtual machines created by VMware Workstation or VMware Fusion Professional?
Yes, if you purchase a VMware Player Plus or VMware Fusion Professional license. This feature is activated in the licensed version of VMware Player Plus.
Where can I buy VMware Player Plus?
Can I switch between Windows and Linux versions?
Yes. You can switch between Windows and Linux versions of VMware Player Plus using the same license key. If you decide to switch host operating systems, you must uninstall Player Plus from the host operating system you no longer plan to use. If you plan to run VMware Player Plus on both a Linux and Windows host at the same time, you need to purchase two licenses.
Do I get free updates (not upgrades) when I purchase VMware Player Plus?
Yes. The price of VMware Player Plus includes an update service that entitles you to product updates and patches, which are new releases of Player Plus within a given product version (e.g. x.1, and x.1.1, and so forth). Updates are available in electronic format only—not physical media. VMware Player Plus will automatically download updates or you may download updates by visiting the Player Plus Download Page.
NOTE: The price of Player Plus entitles a customer to free updates, but not free upgrades. Upgrade releases contain functional enhancements or significant extensions and must be purchased separately unless you have an active support and subscription (SnS) contract.

Can I commercially use the copy of VMware Player Plus that comes with VMware Workstation?
Yes, you can commercially use the copy of VMware Player Plus that comes with VMware Workstation. It must be run on the same machine VMware Workstation is installed on.
How can I purchase additional copies of VMware Player Plus for commercial use?
You can purchase additional copies of VMware Player Plus in the VMware online store. If you have Macs in your environment, you may be interested in getting additional licenses of VMware Fusion Professional which includes a commercial license for Fusion and Player in one SKU, allowing end users to run virtual machines on a Macs, Windows or Linux PCs. Additional licenses of VMware Fusion Professional can be purchased from the VMware online store.
No modifications may be made to VMware Player Plus installation package and you may not embed VMware Player inside of another application without an OEM agreement.
Can I upgrade from VMware Player Plus to VMware Fusion Professional or VMware Workstation?
Yes, you can upgrade from VMware Player Plus to VMware Fusion Professional or from VMware Player Plus to VMware Workstation. Upgrades can be purchased from the VMware online store.
Can VMware Player (Plus) install on the same machine as other VMware products?
No. VMware Player is not designed to co-install with other VMware products. If an installation of VMware Workstation or VMware Server is detected on a machine where VMware Player is being installed, the VMware Player installation will display an error message and abort. However, if you purchase and install VMware Workstation a version of VMware Player that will work is included.
What is the support period and end of life for VMware Player Plus?
What support comes with VMware Player Plus?
VMware will provide you with limited web-based installation support for VMware Player Plus for a period of thirty (30) days after the date of registration and with the "VMware Complimentary Update Service" for a period of eighteen (18) months from the date of general availability of the software. The "VMware Complimentary Update Service" is defined in the VMware Support and Subscription Services Terms and Conditions.
What are the support options for VMware Player Plus?
If you need tailored support, Per Incident Support can be purchased for VMware Player Plus in 1-, 3- or 5-incident packs.
