Hyperic monitors and measures every predictable availability parameter—load, capacity, resource utilization—and projects future availability based on historical data. Hyperic can initiate Control Actions at a scheduled time, in response to an alert condition, as part of an escalation chain, or “on demand” based on system admin input. If (and only if) a Control Action-related problem occurs, you’ll receive an alert.

Hyperic tracks and notates Control Actions that have been performed, whether as part of a normally scheduled workflow or in response to specific problems. The dashboard lists recent Control Actions across the deployment, and a resource's Control page includes Control Action history.

Here are just a few of Hyperic’s available Control Actions:

• Restart a virtual machine, start a new instance of a virtual machine, or roll back a virtual machine instance to a snapshot
• Restart an application server and then run garbage collection on it
• Automate deployment and metric collection for new application components as they come online
• Vacuum a database server
• Kill an operating system process
• Run a script

You can apply a Hyperic Control Action to a single resource, or to a group of the same type. For instance, you can bounce all your web servers once a day with a single command.
