Cloud-optimized Licensing

vFabric Suite Advanced licensing is optimized for the needs of modern cloud applications:

Cloud Application Requirement vFabric Approach
Apps deployed on virtual infrastructure Per-VM pricing for hardware independence

License only infrastructure capacity used
Web orientation drives highly variable workloads Average use pricing

Eliminates budget waste associated with peak use pricing
Flexibility to adjust architecture as needs change. Fluid licensing.

Re-use licenses across different types of servers.

Per-VM or per-Machine pricing

VMware vFabric Suite is licensed on a per-Virtual Machine (VM) or per-Machine basis, regardless of the power of the speed of the phsyical CPUs on the host. This has three advantages:

  • License only for the capacity used, and no more.
  • No complex “power factors” that increase price CPU speeds rise.
  • (For vSphere and cloud enviornments) Distribute vFabric VMs to any host without concern for hardware configuration.

vFabric Suite is licensed in single-VM or machine increments; buy exactly what you need, and no more.

Average use pricing

VMware vFabric Suite is licensed based on average usage. Only powered-on vFabric machine instances count towards license usage; VMs and machines that are powered-down or suspended do not. You license only for the machine instances used, which eliminates budget waste.

Usage is measured second-by-second. Averages are measured based on trailing 90 day usage. This eliminates the need to overprovision application infrastructure to accommodate peak workloads. This makes vFabric especially attractive for use QA labs, where tests are run intermittently, as well as in disaster recovery sites, where application instances are used rarely, if ever used.

The diagram below demonstrates how average use pricing eliminates the utility gap created by peak use pricing combined with seasonal peaks in application usage:

Fluid licensing

Each VMware vFabric Suite license covers a broad range of components: database, app server, web server, and messaging. This fluid licensing lets you re-use licenses across different types of servers, and provides you with flexibility to adjust application architecture as needs change, reducing the risk of overprovisioning licenses for any application tier.

For example, suppose you purchase eight vFabric licenses and deploy them as follows:

You later realize that you’ve over provisioned your web tier, and under-provisioned your app server tier. With vFabric Suite’s fluid licensing, simply power down a web server instance and power up an app server instance, to remain in compliance:

Licensing for larger VMs

Each licensed vFabric Suite Virtual Machine (VM) may have up to two vCPUs. VMs with more than two vCPUs require multiple vFabric licenses: each incremental one or two vCPUs requires an additional vFabric license. Examples:

  • VM with three or four vCPUs requires two vFabric Suite licenses.
  • A VM with five or six vCPUs requires three vFabric Suite licenses.
  • Amazon EC2 is similarly accounted with compute units considered equivalent to vCPUs.

Licensing for higher cores

Similar to how vFabric Suite is licensed for VMs, a vFabric Suite license can also apply to a physical CPU up to two physical cores. Machines with more than two physical cores or CPUs require multiple vFabric licenses: each incremental one or two core requires an additional vFabric license. Examples:

  • Machine with a quad-core CPU requires two vFabric Suite licenses.
  • Machine with two dual-core CPUs requires two vFabric Suite licenses.

Support Levels

VMware offers a choice of support levels:

Support for open source components within vFabric suite – Spring Framework, Apache Tomcat, Apache HTTP Server, and open source RabbitMQ -- is provided through annual support and subscription (SnS) contracts, not via the vFabric Suite perpetual license.

Additional Licensing

vFabric Suite licensing is available for US Federal Government entities (GSA pricing), qualifying academic institutions, and managed service providers enrolled in the VMware Service Provider Program (VSPP). For details, please contact a reseller or vFabric expert.
