vSphere Availability Features

Downtime is expensive. vSphere makes it possible to reduce both planned and unplanned downtime.

  • Eliminate planned downtime for server and storage maintenance
  • Minimize unplanned downtime with automated restart of virtual machines
  • Optimize server and storage usage with automated virtual machine placement and load balancing
  • Automate backup and recovery
  • Replicate critical virtual machines and data to a remote site
  • Automate site wide disaster recovery

Eliminate Planned Downtime for Server and Storage Maintenance

vSphere vMotion lets you to migrate virtual machines from one vSphere host to another while the virtual machines continue to run with no impact to its end users. Perform server maintenance and upgrades without scheduling downtime and disrupting business operations. Proactively move virtual machines away from failing or underperforming servers. vSphere vMotion lets you dynamically reconfigure the placement of your virtual machines across vSphere servers based on changing hardware events or business policies.

vSphere Storage VMotion lets you to migrate your virtual machine disk files from one datastore to another without disrupting service to the end user. Simplify storage array migrations, maintenance, and upgrades. Dynamically optimize storage I/O performance. Storage vMotion gives you the flexibility to take control of your storage operations.

Minimize unplanned downtime with automated restart of virtual machines on hardware or software failure

vSphere High Availability (HA) provides easy-to-use, cost effective high availability for applications running in virtual machines. In the event of physical server failure, affected virtual machines are automatically restarted on other servers with spare capacity. In the case of operating system failure, vSphere HA restarts the affected virtual machine on the same physical server.

vSphere Fault Tolerance (FT) extends the protection offered by VMware HA with even greater levels of protection for your mission-critical virtual machines. Enabling FT on virtual machines in your HA cluster will provide zero downtime and zero data loss protection of your workloads against server hardware failure.

Optimize server and storage usage with automated virtual machine placement and load balancing

Align your IT infrastructure with your business goals by dynamically allocating and balancing resources.

vSphere Distributed Resource Scheduler (DRS) continuously monitors CPU and memory utilization across a cluster of vSphere hosts and intelligently allocates available resources among virtual machines according to business needs.

vSphere Storage DRS places workloads on storage volumes during provisioning based on available storage resources. It will also perform ongoing load balancing between datastores to ensure space and I/O bottlenecks are avoided.

Automate Backup and Recovery

There are a variety of ways to backup and restore a vSphere environment. The most common include vSphere Data Protection and 3rd party backup software leveraging the vSphere API’s for Data Protection.

vSphere Data Protection (VDP) is a built-in backup and recovery solution for virtual machines. This solution is fully integrated with VMware vCenter Server™ and provides agentless, disk-based backup of virtual machines to de-duplicated storage.

3rd party solutions from a number of vendors can backup and restore vSphere virtual machine and data using the vSphere Storage APIs for Data Protection. The Storage APIs for Data Protection enable backup software to perform centralized virtual machine backups without the disruption and overhead of running backup tasks from inside each virtual machine.

Replicate Virtual Machines to a Second Location

vSphere Replication is a new feature of the VMware vSphere platform. It copies a virtual machine to another location, within or between clusters, and makes that copy available for restoration through the vCenter Server web client. vSphere Replication replicates changes made to the virtual machine to the copy on an ongoing basis, making the virtual machine protected and available for recovery without requiring restore from backup. Recovery of virtual machines protected with vSphere Replication can also be automated using VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager.

Automate Site Wide Disaster Recovery with VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager (SRM)

VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager delivers disaster recovery management and automation for the datacenter. vCenter SRM integrates with VMware vSphere and VMware vCenter Server. vCenter SRM allows for rapid, reliable and affordable recovery so you can build, test and automate disaster recovery plans. vCenter Site Recovery Manager is not included with vSphere and must be purchased separately.
