Fault Tolerance
vSphere Fault Tolerance (FT) provides continuous availability for applications in the event of server failures by creating a live shadow instance of a virtual machine that is in virtual lockstep with the primary instance. By allowing instantaneous failover between the two instances in the event of hardware failure, FT eliminates even the smallest chance of data loss or disruption.
- Automatically trigger seamless stateful failover when the protected virtual machines fail to respond for zero downtime, zero data loss continuous availability
- Automatically trigger the creation of a new secondary virtual machine after failover, to ensure continuous protection to the application
Protect Your Applications Regardless of Operating System or Underlying Hardware
Protect any virtual machine including homegrown applications and custom applications that cannot be protected with traditional high availability products.
- Compatible with all types of shared storage including Fibre Channel, iSCSI, FCoE and NAS
- Compatible with all operating systems supported with VMware vSphere
- Works with existing vSphere DRS and High Availability (HA) clusters for advanced load balancing and optimized initial placement of virtual machines
- FT-specific versioning-control mechanism allows the primary and secondary virtual machines to run on FT-compatible hosts at different but compatible patch levels
Simple to Set Up and Turn On and Off on a Per-Machine Basis
Since it leverages existing vSphere HA clusters, any number of virtual machines in a cluster can be protected with FT. Applications that require continuous protection during certain critical periods of time, such as quarter end processing, can utilize FT for higher assurance of availability during those time periods.
- Turn FT on or off through an easy point and click action in the vSphere Web Client, allowing administrators to use the capability as needed
