vSphere 5 License Overview

Before you upgrade to VMware vSphere 5, run the Licensing Advisor Script below to learn how much vRAM you are currently using and how much you are entitled to under vSphere 5 licensing.

Because vSphere 5 licensing is on a per-processor basis with vRam entitlement, you need to make sure all license keys you have purchased are entered into vCenter Server.

The following vRAM entitlements will be given per license type:

License Type
Essentials Essentials Plus Standard Enterprise Enterprise Plus
vRAM Entitlement per License
32GB
32GB
32GB
64GB
96GB

More information on these changes can be found in the VMware vSphere 5.0 Licensing, Pricing and Packaging whitepaper.

vSphere Licensing Advisor Script

The vSphere License Validator Script, a PowerCLI script, provides insight into your vRAM capacity and its usage in vSphere 4.1 environments as if they were upgraded to vSphere 5. The script will show you each licensed edition and the vRAM usage and capacity for that edition.

How to Use the Script

  1. Install PowerCLI (refer to the PowerCLI blog)
  2. Download the vSphere License Validator script (requires vSphere PowerCLI)
  3. Watch the below video on how to run the script

Notes:

    • This script does not account for vCenter Servers in linked mode. If you have multiple vCenter Servers in linked mode, run the script against each vCenter Server and add the results (both Pooled vRAM Capacity and vRAM Used) for each vSphere edition to simulate the effects of linked mode.
    • This script requires vSphere 4.1 or higher.
    • This script requires Windows PowerShell V2
