VMware Drives Cloud Management to New Levels

By Ramin Sayar, senior vice president and general manager, Cloud Management Business Unit

Reflecting back on VMworld 2014 in San Francisco, I was struck by the number of conversations I had with the diverse set of customers attending the show. Not just the range of companies and industries they represented, and not just the various roles that make up the infra and ops teams that VMware has always championed. But the conversations with developers, application support admins, IT finance managers, and Risk & Compliance personnel, among others. When I saw both Dev and Ops folks attending the breakouts and walking the solution exchange at VMworld, it hit me that the times they are a-changin’ (with all due respect to Mr. Dylan).

The fact is that our customers are in a state of transition with many at the point of making fundamental decisions about how to re-architect their IT organizations for the future. They are adopting software-defined data center (SDDC) and hybrid cloud computing models. They are seeking to gain the speed and agility the cloud promises with the mobile, social, big data and web-scale applications their customers expect.  Many are turning to agile development, and looking to extend that agility into production through DevOps tools and processes.

I see the challenges and opportunities IT leaders are experiencing. And as a result I’m pushing my product development team to quickly evolve VMware’s cloud management solutions to help customers take advantage of SDDC and the hybrid cloud.

That’s why I’m excited to announce that fast on the heels of the VMware vRealize Suite launch in August 2014, we are introducing new and improved cloud management offerings here at VMworld 2014 Europe in Barcelona. Today, we are launching a wave of major updates across the vRealize Suite, introducing a DevOps solution called vRealize Code Stream that accelerates the application release process, and inviting participation in the beta of vRealize Air Compliance, the latest addition to our family of “as a service” management offerings.

Striking the Right Balance

On a weekly basis I meet with IT execs and decision makers that are being asked to pull off a difficult balancing act. IT must deliver agile services and maintain control. IT must support traditional and modern applications. IT must enable workloads on-premises and in the cloud. Considering the number of competing priorities CIOs need to balance today, you’d think they’d have a shot at a high-wire circus act should they ever consider a second career.

The ability to do both — on-premises and cloud, modern and traditional applications, agility and control — is what our CEO Pat Gelsinger calls the power of “and.” VMware’s cloud management platform — the vRealize Suite — delivers the power of “and.” A single platform based on a shared service model that delivers a unified management experience across private and public clouds, multiple hypervisors and physical systems, the vRealize Suite can address these competing, even conflicting demands.  With the vRealize Suite, IT can have its cake and eat it too.

vRealize Code Stream

At VMware, we understand that what our customers ultimately care about is how effectively IT can support their business processes, and the applications that instantiate them. That is why we are developing new solutions to help IT deliver and manage their applications. Today, we are launching vRealize Code Stream, a solution that enables IT to support the flood of new application workloads being delivered by DevOps and LOB teams. It allows the rapid release of software from development to production environments while reducing operational risk. Our goal is to extend the agility provided by Continuous Integration through Continuous Delivery to enable frequent, reliable software releases. vRealize Code Stream provides complete visibility into the entire release process to both the development and operations teams.

vRealize Operations 6.0

Back in 2011, we set out to simplify and automate how customers manage their virtual and cloud environments with the delivery of vRealize Operations (formerly vCenter Operations Management Suite). Today, we announce the most significant release of the product since its introduction – vRealize Operations 6.0.  This re-architected new version delivers intelligent operations management from applications to storage and across physical, virtual and cloud environments. Customers now have a single console for comprehensive visibility across applications, storage and network devices. And the new platform architecture is 8x more scalable than previous product releases.

vRealize Air Compliance beta – New Addition to SaaS Family

One thing customers have frequently asked for in our conversations is that VMware offer our cloud management solutions via a software as a service model. We’ve listened. Following the beta of vRealize Air Automation in August 2014, we are announcing the beta of vRealize Air Compliance. Within minutes, customers can be up and running assessing their vSphere environments against a number of regulatory and security requirements including the vSphere Hardening Guide and HIPPA/HITECH guidelines for the healthcare industry.

We understand IT has a tough balancing act. Our focus is help you address the IT challenges of today with an eye towards the future. The innovation announced today backs that up.

If you’re at VMworld this week, drop by my spotlight session on Tuesday, Oct. 14 at 5:00pm CEST in Hall 8.0, Room 43. You can also learn more about our new and updated offerings at the VMware booth.
