VMware Cloud Foundation

This section of the VMware Compatibility Guide (VCG) lists VMware Cloud Foundation compatible components.

Overview:

VMware Cloud Foundation is VMware’s new unified SDDC platform for private and public clouds. VMware Cloud Foundation brings together VMware’s compute, storage, and network virtualization into a natively integrated stack, delivering enterprise-ready cloud infrastructure with unique automation and management capabilities for simplified operations that is consistent across private and public clouds

VMware Cloud Foundation is delivered to customers as a single software package that combines multiple components of VMware’s SDDC stack into an integrated stack that is deployed and maintained as a unit

VMware Cloud Foundation 2.0 & 2.1 -

Every Cloud Foundation deployment includes the following software components:

  • SDDC Manager
  • vCenter Server
  • vSphere (ESXi)
  • VSAN
  • NSX

VMware Cloud Foundation 2.0 & 2.1 – Hardware requirements

VMware Cloud Foundation has the following hardware requirements:

  • Servers - Qualified VSAN Ready Nodes from Dell, HP and QCT:
    1. Supported categories are: HY-4, HY-6, HY-8 for hybrid and AF-4, AF-6 and AF-8 for all-flash.
    2. CPU and Memory configurations are inherited from the VSAN Program.
    3. All nodes will be 2 socket systems.
  • Switches:
    • Cisco ToR and spine switches - running Cisco OS 7.0(3)I2(2d)
      1. ToR: 9372PX (48 10G ports + 6 40G ports) – two ToRs per rack
      2. Spine: 9332PQ (32 40G ports) – two spines for a total of up to eight racks
    • Arista ToR and spine switches - running Arista OS 4.17.0F
      1. ToR: 7280SE-72 (48 10G ports + six 40G ports) – two ToRs per rack
      2. Spine: 7050QX (32 40G ports) – two spines for a total of up to eight racks
    • Management switches (one per rack)
      1. Quanta T1048 LB-9 – running Cumulus Linux 2.5.8
      2. Dell S3048 – 48 x 1G – running Cumulus Linux 2.5.8
    • Selection Note 1: You need to choose all Cisco switches (ToRs and spines) or all Arista switches (ToRs and spines) – you cannot mix and match between the two vendors (e.g. Arista ToR switches with Cisco spine switches is an invalid configuration).
    • Selection Note 2: Either of the two management switch options can be chosen – this is independent of the choice of the ToR and spine switches.
