Centrally Manage Thousands of Virtual Machines

The Software-Defined Data Center (SDDC) is the ideal architecture for building and operating a private or public cloud.

The SDDC architecture virtualizes all data center domains: compute, storage, availability, networking and security, and it delivers management that is automated by software. The SDDC enables delivery of IT-as-a-Service (ITaaS) while achieving transformational levels of efficiency, agility, control and choice for businesses.

An essential component of the SDDC is the VMware vCenter Server which can centrally manage hundreds of hosts (up to 1,000 per vCenter) and thousands of virtual machines (up to 10,000 per vCenter), delivering operational automation, resource optimization and high availability to IT environments. Using a single web-based client for all tasks, administrators can provision, configure, start, stop, delete, relocate and remotely access virtual machines with keyboard and mouse control. VMware vCenter Server also has a Linked Mode that provides visibility across multiple vCenter Server instances, with roles, permissions and licenses replicated across the infrastructure so you can simultaneously log in, view and search the inventories of up to 10 vCenter Servers.

vCenter Server collects and stores real-time performance data from vSphere hosts. This data is then fed into vSphere with Operations Management. vSphere with Operations Management provides a holistic view of how the IT infrastructure is operating – for example, customers can utilize dashboards as the single source of truth that benchmarks health, risk, and efficiency levels.

vSphere with Operations Management offers the following additional features:

  • Capacity Management and Optimization – Ensures virtual machines are right-sized for the most efficient use of virtualized resources.
  • Health Monitoring and Performance Analytics – Uses patented, self-learning analytics to anticipate and identify performance bottlenecks
  • Operations Dashboard and Root Cause Analysis – Provides intuitive operations dashboards with actionable recommendations to reduce time spent on diagnostics and problem resolution.

Other virtualization platforms offer either incomplete solutions or require a customer to deploy, configure, and manage multiple applications—often from third parties—just to obtain a subset of the functionality available in VMware vSphere with Operations Management and vCenter Server.

VMware vCenter Server delivers the highest levels of simplicity, efficiency, security and reliability to manage small and large virtualized IT environments including:

  • Centralized management
  • Performance monitoring
  • Operational automation
  • Clustering and pooling of physical resources
  • Rapid provisioning
  • Secure access control
  • Full SDK support for integrations
