RIM Meets Availability, Performance and Cost Goals with Virtualization

BlackBerry Enterprise Server provides a critical link between BlackBerry® smartphones, enterprise applications, and wireless networks — extending communications and corporate data to mobile users. The infrastructure that supports BlackBerry Enterprise Server must meet a company’s demands for availability, performance, and cost, as well as provide the flexibility to adapt quickly to changing business requirements.

Achieve Lower TCO While Easing Implementation and Management with Virtualization

Running BlackBerry Enterprise Server on VMware vSpherehelps Research In Motion (RIM) customers meet periods of higher demand and maintain required service levels at a lower TCO. Tools such as VMware HA, vMotion, and DRS help RIM customers ensure high availability and simplify application provisioning, maintenance, and disaster recovery. Customers can respond to changing workloads by rapidly provisioning additional BlackBerry Enterprise Server instances during peak activity. And in the case of operating system or virtual machine failure, replacement virtual machines can be deployed quickly to restore service.

VMware Virtualizes Its Own Blackberry Enterprise Server

The VMware project to virtualize its own BlackBerry Enterprise Server deployment was successful from both a business and technical perspective. At VMware, four BlackBerry Enterprise Server instances serve the needs of more than 3,000 heavy email users. The deployment was achieved without adding to the number of physical servers in the IT department, and the virtualized environment provides reliability, ease of use, and a 24/7 level of service.

“Once BlackBerry Enterprise Server was virtualized, it became my proving ground. If somebody expressed reservations about virtualizing an application, I’d say, ‘Your BlackBerry smartphone is running on VMware right now.’ That would surprise a lot of people–then make them feel more comfortable about trying out something else on VMware VMs. Once they know the reliability is there, their comfort level rises fast.”
