Before You Install on a Turbolinux Enterprise Server 8 Host

Before you install GSX Server on a TLES 8 host, you must install the gcc program and configure the inetd process to start when the host boots.

The gcc program is not installed on a TLES 8 host by default. This compiler is required by the VmPerl API.

The inetd process, which is required for the VMware Management Interface and VMware Virtual Machine Console to run properly, is not configured to start at boot time on a TLES 8 host.

Note: At this time, TLES 8 is not a supported host operating system. In addition, GSX Server only runs on TLES 8 when it is installed with the stock 2.4.19 kernel.

Installing gcc in the Host Operating System

1. Start your X server, if it does not start by default, and log on as the root user.

2. Run YAST2, the default configuration utility for TLES 8.

3. Click Software in the left pane, click Install or remove software in the right pane.

4. Check C++ Compiler and Tools in the left pane, then click Accept.

5. When prompted, insert the United Linux CD.

6. Click Quit to exit YAST2. The gcc program is installed and you can configure the inetd process.

Configuring the inetd Process in the Host Operating System

1. Make sure your X server is running and that you are logged on as the root user.

2. Open the main menu, then choose Turbolinux > serviceboard.

3. Next to inetd, click Stop and change it to Running.

4. Click the Configure default services tab.

5. Check the inetd check box.

6. Click Save. The inetd process automatically starts when you reboot the host operating system. After you reboot the host operating system, make sure the network card and disk subsystem work as expected.
