Summary
This patch provides updates to the service console package Samba that addresses the following issues:
- Various bugs were found in NDR parsing, used to decode MS-RPC requests in Samba. A remote attacker could send carefully crafted requests causing a heap overflow, potentially enabling him to execute
arbitrary code on the server. (CVE-2007-2446)
- Unescaped user input parameters were being passed as arguments to /bin/sh. A remote, authenticated user could trigger this flaw and execute arbitrary code on the server. Additionally, on Red Hat Enterprise Linux 5 only, this flaw could be triggered by a remote unauthenticated user if Samba was configured to use the non-default username map script option. (CVE-2007-2447).
Thanks to Samba developers, TippingPoint, and iDefense for reporting these issues.
The Common Vulnerabilities and Exposures project (cve.mitre.org) assigned the names CVE-2007-2446 and CVE-2007-2447 to these security issues.
Note: These issues only affect the service console network, and are not remote vulnerabilities for ESX Server hosts that have been set up with the security best practices provided by VMware.
Symptoms
There are no symptoms available for the security fixes.
Impact
This patch resolves the security issue described above.

08bfdec038ea900c72f04e8d50b2db62 ESX-1001204.tgz
- Extract the compressed tar archive:
# tar -xvzf ESX-1001204.tgz
- Change to the newly created directory, /var/updates/ESX-1001204:
# cd ESX-1001204
Installation Instructions
Once you have downloaded and extracted the archive, and if you are in the directory you created above, install the update using the following command:
# esxupdate update
To run esxupdate from a different directory, you must specify the bundle path in the command:
# esxupdate -r file://<directory>/ESX-1001204 update
for example, if the host is called depot:
# esxupdate -r file:///depot/var/updates/ESX-1001204 update
During the update process, logs appear on the terminal. You can specify the verbosity of esxupdate logs by using the -v option as shown below.
# esxupdate -v 10 file://<directory>/ESX-1001204 update
