Application vServices Roadmap
Application vServices are services provided by the virtual datacenter OS to all applications. They comprise:
Availability
VMware transforms availability by building in simple, hardware and software-independent availability solutions for managing every type of downtime right into the VMware virtualization suite. The inherent reliability of VMware ESX is also a big factor, ensuring that no new risks are introduced into the environment because of the hypervisor.
| Today |
2009 |
- VMware VMotion eliminates disruption due to planned server downtime through live migration of running virtual machines
- VMware Storage VMotion eliminates disruption due to planned storage downtime through live migration of running virtual machine disks
- VMware HA provides simple, cost effective restart of virtual machines in the case of hardware failures
- NIC and HBA teaming provide protection against component failures
- Leading backup software vendors leverage VMware Consolidated Backup to provide off host, agent less virtual machine backup and restore
|
- VMware Fault Tolerance, a groundbreaking new product provides zero downtime, zero data loss and availability to all applications against x86 hardware failures without the cost and complexity of hardware or software clustering solutions.
- When VMware Fault Tolerance is enabled through simple point and click for a virtual machine, it uses VMotion and creates a secondary virtual machine running on a different physical host.
- It then uses vLockstep technology to keep the primary and secondary virtual machines in exactly the same state on another server.
- In the event of hardware failure on the primary virtual machine, the secondary takes over with no disruption to users
- vCenter Data Recovery provides quick, simple and cost effective backup and recovery for all applications through:
- Agentless disk based back up and recovery of virtual machine
- Incremental backups and deduplication to save disk space
- vCenter – integrated virtual machine level or file level restore

Security
| Today |
2009 |
- VMware ESXi with a thin 32MB footprint and secure OS independent architecture creates an inherently more reliable and secure platform as compared to other virtualization solutions
|
- VMware VMsafe provides x-ray visibility into virtual machine resources from the vantage point of the hypervisor, making it possible to monitor every aspect of the execution of the system and stop previously undetectable viruses, rootkits and malware before they can infect a system
- Checkpoint, IBM, McAfee, Radware, and TrendMicro are announcing their plans to deliver VMSafe –integrated products in 2009 that provide superior protection to virtual machines than possible with physical machines or other virtualization solutions
|
Scalability
| Today |
2009 |
- VMware DRS uses shares and reservations to enable priority based scaling up or down of applications
|
- Virtual machines increase in size from 4 way to 8 way SMP, from 64 GB to 256GB of RAM, enabling even the largest, most resource intensive applications to run on VMware.
- Hot add of virtual CPU, memory and network devices enables applications to scale seamlessly without disruption or downtime

Application Description and Deployment with vApp
- vApp turns new and existing applications into self-describing and self-managing entities. vApp leverages OVF, an open industry standard, to specify and encapsulate all components of a multi-tier application as well as the operational policies and service levels associated with it. Just like the UPC bar code contains all information about a product, the vApp gives application owners a standard way to describe operational policies for an application which the Virtual Datacenter OS can automatically interpret and execute.
- VMware vStudio, an authoring and configuration tool, enables ISVs and enterprises to construct Virtual Appliances and vApps. Instead of deploying and managing operating systems and applications separately, now a vApp can be deployed and managed as a single entity . VMware Studio is being used by leading ISVs today.
