Manage the Transition to Better End-User Computing

The VMware EUC vision explained. (11:00)

We have been living in the PC era for almost thirty years. Paper, file folders, memos and physical in and out boxes on the desk turned into applications on the PC, and were meant to drive efficiency. The PC effectively re-defined the way people worked. But it has led to silos of disconnected end-users and technology with conflicting interests. This is compounded by the pace of change in technology, with new devices and new ways to get things done being offered continuously. Despite the technical challenges though, users are already working differently:

  • US Employees Survey indicates that 27% of employees use do-it-yourself tech
  • US Employees Survey show that 97% of people carry more than two devices
  • Hardware shipments in 2015 projected at 300M tablets and 1.1B cell phones
  • Mobile applications market expected to reach $33B by 2015

IT needs to manage this transition rather than resist it so they can securely embrace new platforms, new devices, and new means of collaboration that improves workforce productivity and business agility.

Simplify Existing Services, Manage Devices and Data, and Connect People and Technology

Simplify Technology Silos into Managed Services

Turning the PC and application silos into centralized services simplifies the existing infrastructure. Traditional PCs are decomposed into virtual desktops and delivered as a service. Disparate application silos (Windows, Enterprise, SaaS, Mobile) are aggregated into a single universal application catalog service. Documents and data break free from static PC hard drives and evolve into a centralized data service.

Manage Technology Services by Policy

The EUC platform includes a universal services broker to securely manage the desktop, application, and data services across the public and private cloud. IT manages user access to resources centrally, using the policies that govern their business. This approach reduces complexity, enables finer-grained control over how resources are used and is flexible enough to adapt to technology and business change.

Connect Users to Each Other and Technology

The EUC platform connects people to each other and to technology, across a variety of device types and platforms. Through secure and flexible connections, users can access the desktop, application, and data services assigned to them from any device. They can connect to and work with each other through a new breed of social applications that support real time sharing, collaborative workflows and multi-channel communication.

Take a phased approach to better end-user computing.
