Description:
General Info:
The Network Information & Monitoring Appliance (NIMA) grew out of the necessity to find out exactly where (on a network) Internet traffic was originating, and to find out if there were any rogue computers accessing the local network.
Using NIMA version 1, you can successfully monitor all of the traffic on your LAN - ensure that no one is mis-using valuable bandwidth, see if anyone is viewing *inappropriate* material, find out which workstations use the most bandwith, etc.
NIMA also allows you to successfully map out your network, scan your servers for vulnerabilities and ensure that your Network Infrastructure is working correctly (Finger, DNS Servers, etc.).
How NIMA was built:
NIMA was prototyped using the instructions provided with "Linux From Scratch", but was re-implemented using the Gentoo* Linux build system. This was done to provide an easy way to keep the software up-to-date.
The entire appliance was built from source code using the Gentoo* Linux 2006.0 distribution. All applications were optimized for a "Pentium Pro" or newer processor and the binaries were built with the GCC program using the -Os flag to optimize for size. Also, if a program could optionally be built without an unneeded library, that feature was turned off.
To ensure easy operation, the IceWM window manager was chosen because it is similar to the Microsoft Windows Explorer interface. All the menus were re-implemented to ensure easy access to all of the programs available. The Sudo program is also heavily used to ensure that no password is needed for general use.
A few programs were hacked on, such as xscreensaver, GNOME Network Tools, Driftnet, etc. (mostly minor changes). Other (very) small programs were created to do various tasks, such as auto-login, auto-start X.org, run X apps using sudo, etc. Most applications were not touched. Finally, I created a few themes to create the appearance that all of the programs fit together nicely.
Using NIMA:
For usage as a Monitoring Appliance, NIMA does require being located correctly on a network. For instance, to get the Monitoring programs to work correctly, the Virtual Machine's Host must be physically connected to a either a Network Hub, or be connected to a "monitor" port on a switch. Otherwise if it is simply connected to a switch, there will be very little network traffic to monitor, for more information about this refer to the user's guide (see below for link).
"Out of the Box" NIMA is configured to get an IP address from a DHCP Server on your network. If you need to set a manual IP Address, simply Change the network settings using the "Start Menu" and restart the network (also using the "Start Menu").
NIMA was built to be very easy to use for anyone familiar with a Windows based computer. It was also built to be ran on a Windows based Host. Some features may not work properly on a Linux based Host (depending on the Distribution).
For more information and to download a "User's Guide" visit NIMA's homepage at http://www.pcc-services.com/NIMA/.
License Info:
NIMA was built using Gentoo Linux* and contains programs with the following Software Licenses (all of them "Free Software", except VMWARE Tools).
GPL2, LGPL2, LGPL2.1, Sudo, bzip2, Info-Zip, as-is, vim, freedist, PSF-2.2, BSD, MIT, OpenSSL, Python, Artistic, Fontconfig, Jasper, Public Domain, Freedist, TCP Wrappers License, Flex, Cracklib, DB, Pam and Zlib Licenses.
