LiveCD Virtual Appliance

With this simple Virtual Appliance, you can test live CDs without having to reboot.

Description

1. This virtual appliance can be used in Workstation, Server or Player and could easily be made to work with ESX and GSX. It is can be used a couple ways. One would be if you were a developer and wanted to test your own LiveCDs or, two, if you just wanted to run someone elses LiveCDs... either without the hassle of having to reboot your computer or cluttering up your area any more with another PC. It has become very popular in the linux community for getting non-linux people to play with linux on their windows boxes. There have been over 10,000 downloads of this vm from my website since it was added in Feb06. Besides getting these non-linux people's feet wet with linux, it is also introducing them to the magic of virtualization.

2. This is the simplest possible Virtual Appliance because it is just a barebones VM that boots from CD. There is a 2gb virtual hard drive just in case you'd want to utilize it from the LiveCD. The name of the LiveCD's ISO just has to be changed to livecd.iso in order to run. This way there is no need to edit the VMX file. So even someone with no knowledge of virtualization technology can run this VM.

3. Detailed instructions to start using the Appliance:

1) First, download and unzip this file. Don't worry, this file is only about 4kb in size (and it is only that large because I included a 2gb drive since some LiveCDs were complaining about the lack of a hard drive).2) Then download the LiveCD of your liking. For this example I downloaded the Knoppix version 4 LiveCD.3) Once you have the LiveCD ISO file on your computer, copy or move it to the folder where you extracted the files in step 1. and rename the file "livecd.iso" I put a blank file there with that name as a placeholder. You'll need to delete it before renaming your real LiveCD ISO.4) Now that the files are in place it should look something like this:5) Now you should be able to open the vmx file with VMware player or workstation... Here's the splash screen of knoppix starting and then a screen-cap of the whole desktop after it booted:

Here's a list of LiveCDs to get you started playing, learning or developing: http://www.frozentech.com/content/livecd.php

4. This was built using VMware Workstation 5.5. No other software was used.
