Description:
NagiosVMA is virtual machine appliance that runs Nagios, a powerful, open-source application which performs host, service and network monitoring. Additionally, the appliance was enhanced with Groundwork Monitor Architect, an open-source, web-based, configuration tool for Nagios. It is intended to offer the end-user sophisticated network monitoring in minutes, instead of hours, (or even days) as is typical with building and configuring a Linux/Nagios host. Using Nagios combined with Monarch and Monarch's automatic host discovery feature, this virtual machine appliance can be booted, configured, and ready to monitor your network in as little as 10 minutes. (in fact, as soon as it boots, its already monitoring this virtual machine appliance!)
The appliance was built on Debian 3.1. When available, Debian Stable packages were used to install dependent packages. Otherwise, when required, components were compiled from source using the latest stable releases. After the base Debian installation, the whole build was scripted to ensure consistancy and audit control. Considerable modifications were made to Nagios in order to accomplish a tight integration with Monarch.
The Virtual Machine Appliance can be started by extracting the NagiosVMA.zip file to an appropriate location, and directing the VMware Player or VMware Workstation software to the correct location. You may use any networking option that includes network adapter with access to a DHCP server.
Once the VM is started, the console login screen will indicate the "Boot Time IP Address". Point your browser to that IP address (ie: http://192.168.1.100) which brings up the NagiosVMA web console. There, you will find more information, including Quick Start instructions.
