Somerset School District

K-12 education has changed dramatically in recent years. According to Sara Eichten, principal at Somerset Middle School in Wisconsin, “The Common Core State Standards have drastically changed what we need to be doing with our students in both English language arts and mathematics, as well as focusing on disciplinary literacy in science, social studies, and other related arts classes.” So in May 2013 when Somerset School District was selected to participate in a pilot program to test the Smarter Balanced Assessment Consortium (SBAC) platform to meet the requirements of the Common Core State Standards Initiative, it looked to VMware for help. VMware Horizon View helped ease the deployment of the rigorous testing platform and deliver a seamless user experience to students.

"With VMware Horizon View, we didn’t experience any technical issues when we did the [Smarter Balanced] pilot. People were concerned about audio sound quality, videos, mouse movements—those things that are critical in high-stakes testing—but we saw no performance issues whatsoever in our environment. The virtual environment performed the way we expected it to, and we’re very happy with the results.”

— Ryan Sicard, Director of IT, Somerset School District

SSOE Group

SSOE Group is an Engineering, Procurement and Construction Management firm with 1200 employees located in 29 offices across 7 countries. SSOE leverages the best talent that they have to complete client projects no matter where that talent is located and this requires global collaboration in a 3D environment. SSOE selected a solution utilizing VMware Horizon View, Cisco, and NVIDIA to deliver the 3D graphics performance required from applications such as Autodesk Revit to complete projects in a virtualized desktop environment.

"I’d absolutely recommend the Cisco Invidia VMware Horizon View solution to other companies who are using graphically intensive applications. It's the best of all possible worlds. With Cisco you're getting the hardware, reliability, performance, price point. With Invidia, the graphics acceleration, simply unmatched in a solution like this. And obviously VMware Horizon View is producing the capability for me to get a global work force collaborating in one location, using disparate people from anywhere."

— Bill Case, Director of Computer & Information Systems, SSOE Group

State Department of Health

State’s Department of Health Deploys VMware Virtual SAN to Increase Storage Capacity and Performance

The Bureau of Women, Infants, and Children (WIC) plays an important role in health departments’ mission of delivering healthy outcomes to all of their state’s inhabitants. Thus, when an aging, out-of-capacity storage solution began to hinder efficient delivery of the bureau’s services in one state, the Department of Health (DOH) there needed to take action. To do so, it turned to VMware Virtual SAN™, which delivered more capacity for less cost and also improved application and system performance.

“In the past, we were always worried about over-provisioning, but with the thin provisioning afforded by VMware Virtual SAN we’ve gained so much space, this is simply not an issue.”

— Network Administrator, State Department of Health

STV Engineering

STV Engineering uses VMware Horizon along with NVIDIA GRID technology to deliver high performance 3D graphics performance to its workers. They use desktop virtualization to comply with their security policy when dealing with external workers and also use desktop virtualization in case workers are unable to come to the office due to a natural disaster such as what they experienced with Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

"Like many organization we have security concerns and compliance concerns we need to abide by. VDI allowed us to bring the data to one central location housed within STV, so we could provide access to external stakeholders. No matter where the client was, we knew where the data would be."

— Matt Dierolf, Manager Network Systems, STV

Tamkang University

Tamkang University Software Cloud Runs on Virtual SAN and Horizon View

Tamkang Software Cloud, built by Tamkang University’s Office of Information Services in 2013, is designed to improve the university’s software utilization and meet the mobile application needs of its faculty and students. They chose VMware Horizon View as the desktop interface coupled with VMware Virtual SAN as their hyperconverged infrastructure platform to build a scalable, efficient cloud through which students could access software resources on their own mobile devices anytime, anywhere.

“VMware is the leading company which can provide us trusted products and technologies. Since the target users of the Software Cloud are 28,000 faculty members and students, we cannot risk ourselves to use technologies that have not been market-tested. Our students will be able to develop 3D applications though the software cloud, with Virtual SAN providing software-defined storage on the back-end for lower TCO.”

— Hwang Ming-ta, Professor & Head of Office of Information Services, Tamkang University

Cloud Based Disaster Recovery is Changing how VMware Customers do Business

Have you ever wondered how a comprehensive disaster recovery strategy could be implemented in the cloud? What applications can you protect in the cloud? Can you simplify your environment at a lower cost? What are the core benefits achieved as a result of implementing disaster recovery in the cloud, verses an on-premises solution? On March 25th, 2015 8.00 am PST, we hosted a Google+ Hangout event featuring VMware experts and our customers as they provide a technical deep-dive into the VMware vCloud Air Disaster Recovery service. They shared some of the challenges they faced as well as best practices for solutions to those challenges and ways the service has helped their various businesses.

“The cost difference between doing it yourself versus hosting it on VMware was really something that was attractive to us. And it only took us about six months from the day I joined The Hut Group to the day that we were able to stand up and test a fully functioning website. We never failed a production but we were able to replicate the full production databases out of the full production website and to do that within 6 months makes me feel very good but it also gave the executives comfort that they knew that we now had a solution which would be useful and known when we came to have a disaster.”

— Schalk vd Merwe, IT Director, The Hut Group

Tribune Media

Business Transformation at Tribune Media

Tribune Media has over 42 owned or operated TV Stations, WGN Cable, Gracenote for Entertainment Metadata and Tribune Movie Studios, and is one of the nation’s largest independent broadcasters. VMware has really helped Tribune Media stop the conversations around technology, focusing instead on the outcomes it needs to operate the business. Now they can concentrate on increasing security capabilities, decreasing costs and responding to customer needs faster. Tribune Media can grow the business and go after new markets, and that translates into more revenue per customer.

“VMware has been really critical to drive the fluidity back to the business. My head of engineering has literally a saying over his door. It says, ‘If we can’t automate it we don’t need it’. If we deploy an application in our infrastructure to automate processes, we give that time back. What ends up showing up to the business is our ability to do more projects and do them faster, cheaper and better.”

— David Giambruno, SVP and CIO, Tribune Media

Tribune Media

See How Tribune Media Succeeds with VMware Automation

See how Tribune Media tripled its productivity and kept staffing costs in check with the VMware vRealize Cloud Management Platform, including vRealize Automation. Application setup and configure times are now measured in minutes instead of days, all with help from VMware's Cloud Management Platform.

"We looked at the whole technical landscape, and we came to a really simple conclusion. We knew we were going to build an internal cloud to put our core internal operation platforms on. How do we operate faster, cheaper, better, and more secure? VMware was the choice.”

“In five months, we set up this infrastructure. We moved 141 apps onto the infrastructure and we had 9 helpdesk calls. So guess what? It works. It really works.”

“We have gone from the Flintstones to the Jetsons in less than 18 months."

“It’s literally ‘click a button’ to provide services and capabilities out to the business. We operate in minutes and seconds, not days and weeks.”

— David Giambruno, Senior Vice President and CIO, Tribune Media
