Halton Regional Police Service
Halton Regional Police Service Dramatically Improves Information Access for 911 Dispatch Operators and Expands Mobility with VMware Horizon and AirWatch
The job of 911 dispatchers is stressful by nature. The efficiency of Halton Regional Police dispatchers was being challenged by the service’s existing remote access system that continuously froze and/or locked dispatchers out, causing intolerable delays in receiving information.
Halton Regional Police Service deployed VMware Horizon to deliver reliable and flexible virtual desktops to its 911 dispatchers and reduce their stress. Additionally, they deployed AirWatch Enterprise Mobility Management for secure mobility management.
"We’re one of the safest communities in Canada, and we rely on technology from VMware to provide that top-notch level of service.”
The job of a 20-person IT team supporting 1,000 government employees gets more difficult when the County begins considering a major software upgrade. That’s what IT staff experienced in Hamilton County, located just north of Indianapolis. When Hamilton County had to upgrade to Microsoft Windows 7 and Office 2010, IT staff knew many of its PCs weren’t powerful enough to run them, so they looked to VMware and Unidesk solutions for help. In combination, VMware Horizon View, Unidesk, Dell storage and servers, and zero clients are enabling Hamilton County to achieve all of its desktop virtualization goals—from improved IT staff efficiency and enhanced workforce mobility to greater security and resiliency from desktop failure and disaster. The solution has increased IT agility by reducing provisioning times from hours to minutes, and improved anytime, anywhere employee access to data, applications, and desktops for all county employees.
“Desktop virtualization would allow us to reuse these PCs and extend their life. Plus, our public offices could introduce initiatives or application requirements at any time. Virtual desktops would give us a faster, easier way to respond to these requests while maintaining the high standards of security and service we are known for in our county.”
HDFC Bank Limited
HDFC Bank needed to launch hundreds of branches quickly to provide banking services to 40 million new customers from rural and regional India. The financial services company developed a ‘Branch in a VM’ concept to meet this objective and, between 2008 and 2012, opened more than 1,700 branches. The bank can now provision a new branch in less than 10 days.
"In the past it could take up to a couple of months to setup a new branch. With VMware virtualization, we can do this in under 10 days."

“Once we took a step back and realized what we were doing and the really better ways we could go about leveraging virtualization, software defined data center, software defined networking, software defined storage, we really kind of had an ah-ha moment.”
“Software defined data center is a big initiative for us. We want to get to the point where everything for us is software and configuration. We believe VMware has that similar vision.”
To improve operational efficiencies, Hertz International had a choice of either refreshing its existing infrastructure across its European locations at considerable expense, or implementing newer technologies. In addition to centralising the server estate, Hertz International wanted to simplify its complex desktop infrastructure, which constituted a considerable capital investment. Having over 4,000 PCs and laptops spread over 1,000 sites around Europe, upkeep and maintenance of these were real issue in terms of time, resource and cost. Following a review of the major offerings on the market, Hertz International decided to implement VMware View as it best suited the organisation’s needs and would easily integrate with its existing server virtualization infrastructure. It also made a decision to replace legacy desktop devices with zero client Wyse terminals.
“By virtualizing our server and desktop estate with VMware, we’ve cut costs, dramatically simplified our IT infrastructure and transformed how we support over 1000 desktops in our service centre in Dublin. We’re able to create and deliver even more innovative technology services to our users, while enhancing the experience we provide to our customers. The platform VMware has enabled us to build has given us extremely strong foundations to realise even greater benefits, as we add more and more services and extend the research of the programme internationally.”

Hong Kong Housing Society
The Housing Society has offices throughout the city-state, and when swine flu reached Hong Kong in 2009, the organization realized it needed an alternative location to ensure some employees could still access vital tenancy information and critical services should there be an infectious disease epidemic or natural disaster. The organization virtualized its data center five years ago on VMware vSphere to consolidate its sprawling physical infrastructure and has achieved 94 percent virtualization. All mission critical applications are now virtualized, including its iHousing system for tenancy management, Microsoft Exchange Server, and Oracle JD Edwards financial application. The organization worked with VMware to design and implement a virtual desktop infrastructure solution delivered by VMware Horizon View.
"A virtual desktop solution delivers greater flexibility to our employees because the data follows them rather than tying them to a single location. We had a strong relationship with VMware and existing expertise in the vSphere server virtualization software, and so it made good business sense to virtualize our desktops with VMware."

Virtual SAN enables IndonesianCloud to remain competitive
IndonesianCloud, a cloud service provider, part of the vCloud Air Network, focuses on delivery of enterprise class hosting services to their customers. Their customers primarily run mission critical workloads in IndonesianCloud’s three datacenter environment, which means that stability, reliability and predictability is really important.
The traditional environment they had earlier wasn’t allowing them to remain competitive in a dynamic and price sensitive market. After evaluating several different hyperconverged and software-based offerings they settled on VMware’s hyperconverged infrastructure solution, Virtual SAN. Since the Virtual SAN platform was placed into production, they have deployed over 450 new virtual machines onto their initial 12 node cluster. In addition, migration of another 600 virtual machines from one of their legacy storage platforms onto their Virtual SAN environment is underway.
"VMware Virtual SAN and hyperconverged infrastructure enabled us to reduce our overall platform cost by a staggering 70% which translated directly into savings for our customers. Beyond just direct savings we are also able to simplify how we scale our platform."
