Cloud on Demand
When cloud vendor and Hybrid Cloud enablement partner, Cloud on Demand, looked for a solution that would pave the way for its business and provide the basis for the cloud and hybrid cloud services it sought to provide customers, the company elected to invest in the VMware SDDC (software-defined data centre) as its technology of choice.
“A huge benefit for us is that we have an immediate addressable market. Using the VMware technologies we have been instantly accepted in the market, without having to now educate and court them. This also extends to the training of our reseller base, who are already comfortable with the VMware technologies,”

VMware Automation and DevOps Solutions at Columbia Sportswear
Founded in 1937, Columbia Sportswear is a family-owned business with thousands of employees and operations spread around the globe. With the mission to design and deliver authentic, outdoor, high-value products for active consumers of all ages, the company makes high-quality sportswear that keeps customers comfortable and protected, wherever their excursions take them.
VMware has given Columbia Sportswear the wonderful capability to reduce silos and to blur the lines between application developers and operations. The biggest challenge it faces in the retail space today is the ability to operate at the speed of business and remain nimble and agile for growth.
“As we go forward, we are really looking for application developers to think more like operations and our operations to think more like application developers. vRealize Automation has given us that capability to have those groups as well as security and other interested parties sit side by side to collaborate and to figure out what capabilities need to be brought online. And as those capabilities have been created in templates and blueprints, they can be re-used and actually handed off to those teams to for self-provisioning and management.”

Columbia’s technology solutions are on the bleeding edge to stay ahead of where the business is going—not react to it. Its global business transformation leveraging VMware’s Cloud Management Platform is successfully influencing the way Columbia does business.
“All of what we've been doing around global business transformation is getting ready for us to grow. Whether it's organic growth, adding a brand, or reaching out into new consumer markets, all are pushing what we do with technology, how we reach people, how we connect with them and how we respond to their needs.”
“We feel that the software defined data center and the next steps are going to be critical to long-term success, and cause improvements in our business on a constant basis and yet challenge our people to feel good about what they're delivering every day.”
Columbia Sportswear Gets Extreme on Software-Defined Data Center Strategy
A Briefings Direct podcast on how a major sportswear company has leveraged virtualization and hybrid cloud to reap substantial business benefits.
“With our business changing and growing as quickly as it is, and with us doing business and selling directly to consumers in over a hundred countries around the world, our data centers have to be adaptable. Our data and our applications have to be secure and available, no matter where we are in the world, whether you're on network or off-premises. The SDDC has been a game-changer for us. It’s allowed to take those technologies, host them where we need them, and with whatever cost configuration makes sense, whether it’s in the cloud or on-premises, and deliver the solutions that our business needs”
VMware Horizon Mirage provides Comverse with a complete backup solution, even for their remote employees.

Cork Institute of Technology
Cork Institute of Technology (CIT) is a Third level college based in the south of Ireland in Cork. The challenges they were looking to address in CIT was in relation to the online delivery of cloud computing courses. VMware View allowed them to deploy virtual desktops to the students and also they choose vCloud Director Product to deploy labs to students as well. Since these students use their own vAPP; with vCloud director, the vAPPs are segregated and they are isolated from other vAPPS so they can manipulate these tools, test these tools and not affect the network surrounding.
"We have been forging industry links with VMware and we had worked quite closely with VMware in developing cloud computing academic programmes and it was through these links and through the positive experience we had with VMware products previously that we decided to choose VMware View as the desktop deployment solution and vCloud Director."

After an early pilot with Microsoft Azure failed, the company turned to VMware to migrate quickly to a more robust infrastructure. Using VMware vCloud Air, Creative Solutions in Healthcare gained the technology and control to achieve HIPAA certification and improve application availability while reducing the IT budget by one-third. The company has been able to extend its capabilities to the cloud and implemented a sophisticated electronic health record (EHR) system, including electronic prescriptions and online physician orders, to improve staff agility and patient care.
"We are adaptable, we are ready, we got a very flexible infrastructure with VMware vCloud Air where if we need to motion in a new workload, we can do that more rapidly than any other vendor that we have worked with."
“That’s why we chose VMware vCloud Air as our infrastructure provider partner because we are able to focus on our interaction with our business peers and not have to mind all of the servers and all of the infrastructure and the networking. And we have partnered up with the best organization we feel in the industry to deliver that."

Designer Pages and VMware vCloud Air
Designer Pages was conceived in 2007 with a crude napkin sketch and a lofty vision to reshape the way the architecture and design industries do business. They build tools that help designers find great products and connect with the manufacturers that make them. Designer Pages is located in New York City, which is the largest design market in the world and it’s the hub of all architects and designers. Being located in New York has made it easier for customers to access their solutions.
Having seen the problem with large firms in New York City that were struggling enormously with information management, specifically around products being selected for buildings, Designer Pages decided to deliver for these design firms by providing a product selection and specification platform that would serve as knowledge portal for firms so that every single product selection was accessible indefinitely.
Designer Pages is currently using VMware vCloud Air to host their main company’s website – customer facing as well as other app servers such as load balancer and SQL.
"We wanted to focus on building something that would be valuable for our customers. We did not want to focus our time dealing with technical infrastructure that we knew we would be able to scale ourselves. We decided to move our software to VMware because we knew it would ultimately make us a better business."
EMC Corporation Consulting and IT Services for Life Sciences
EMC Documentum for Life Sciences Regains Its Competitive Edge with VMware vCloud Air
The EMC Documentum for Life Sciences sales force could not always effectively compete, because it took them several weeks to deploy a proof of concept while it took their competitors much less time. In addition, EMC sales engineers had to spend valuable time creating and managing demos. By hosting the EMC Documentum for Life Sciences solution on VMware vCloud® AirTM, EMC now creates and deploys their demo and proofs of concept environments in just a few minutes, and offers tighter security and better performance, both competitive differentiators.
EMC Documentum for Life Sciences helps accelerate product discovery and development. It streamlines and secures information and provides a flexible, secure, powerful and automated information infrastructure essential to speed processes governing research, clinical trials and GMP while reducing cost and complexity. The solutions consist of modules for research and development, clinical trials, regulatory submissions, and manufacturing to provide critical compliance with various global governmental oversight entities such as the FDA. EMC Documentum is the industry standard for regulated document management with more than 75 percent of leading life sciences enterprises relying on EMC Documentum solutions.
"VMware vCloud Air levels the playing field, making EMC as agile as our competitors. We simply can’t compete without it."
ESC Lab Sciences
ESC Lab Sciences Deploys VMware vCloud Air Disaster Recovery to Keep Its Business Operational Under Any Circumstances
As one of the largest and busiest environmental testing labs in the country, ESC Lab Sciences needed a reliable disaster recovery plan that would minimize the possibility of operations grinding to a halt due to natural or human disasters. VMware vCloud Air Disaster Recovery serves as the basis of that plan, integrating seamlessly with the company’s VMware vSphere environment.
ESC Lab Sciences provides environmental testing, analysis, and data to public and private- sector customers nationwide. The Mt. Juliet, Tennessee–based organization was founded in 1970 and has grown to become the largest single-location environmental testing lab in the United States. It now has more than 250 employees extending operations to 50 round- the-clock client support centers located throughout the country, analyzing everything from drinking water and waste water to air quality, industrial hygiene, radiochemistry, and more.
“It took just a few weeks to implement VMware vCloud Air Disaster Recovery and replicate our mission-critical applications and servers. Within a month, I was able to turn on those services and start doing isolated tests.”
ExecuJet Aviation Group
The ExecuJet Aviation Group is a global business aviation organisation, offering a diverse range of services, including aircraft sales, management and charter. ExecuJet runs four data centres in Johannesburg, Capetown, Zurich and Dubai that underpin the IT for the entire organisation. The South African data centre desperately needed to upgrade a large amount of legacy infrastructure, and the company decided to consolidate its server infrastructure using VMware. Following their successful server virtualisation project, the management team got fully behind the IT team to explore the benefits of implementing a virtual desktop infrastructure. They looked into a number of options, but due to our great experiences with VMware and the range of features on offer, they choose to implement VMware View. By using VMware View, ExecuJet employees are now able to run Windows 7 from any internet-enabled device.
“Dealing with highly discerning clients means we have to be at the cutting edge of service and innovation. Being able to use Windows 7 on tablet devices with the help of VMware View has drastically increased flexibility and improved working practices across the board - from sales executives to pilots to maintenance engineers, all of which helps us deliver the best service possible to our customers.”
Golf Course Superintendents Association (GCSAA)
Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA) runs on VMware vCloud Air
The Golf Course Superintendents Association of America (GCSAA), with over 19,000 members in 72 countries, is the professional association for the men and women who manage and maintain the game’s most valuable resource — the golf course. Today, GCSAA and its members are recognized by the golf industry as one of the key contributors in elevating the game and business to its current state.
GCSAA’s mission is to serve its members, advance their profession and enhance the enjoyment, growth and vitality of the game of golf.
After deciding their IT strategy included transitioning to a Software Defined Data Center, they evaluated several vendors. They decided to go with VMware and EMC for server and storage consolidation and virtualization. They are currently 90% virtualized, with a 100% goal in the next couple of years. Currently 50% of their production applications are hosted in vCloud Air (Learning Management and Association Management apps) with a goal of 100%. These applications are important in helping GCSAA to get their customers to learn how to play golf better but also in achieving their goals of growing the business.
They also needed a cloud-based solution that would help them with international expansion rather than having to set up data centers in various countries.
"To stay competitive and to take advantage of new business opportunities, we have to be scalable but also have an environment that is reliable and redundant. And hosting our production environments in VMware vCloud Air has allowed us to grow in a rapid pace in order to fulfill the needs of our current members and our future ones.”
“The best thing that we have experienced with VMware vCloud Air is that we are able to do more with less. And what that means is that having a managed infrastructure up in VMware vCloud Air allows our engineers to basically spin up production test dev environment quickly than we would have had in our previous hosting provide.”
The challenge was to overcome the limitations of physical infrastructure in a data center that had reached the limits of space and required electricity costs for maintenance. The company also wanted to provide its services as cloud. VMware vSphere allows all business-critical applications to run, VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager provides security and reliability, while VMware vCenter Operations Management Suite simplifies IT activity.
"Our data center has always been a cost. In the last year, thanks to VMware, it's become a business. And everything seems to indicate that this will just keep getting better."
