The Hut Group

Hut Group deploys VMware vCloud Air for more scalable, flexible and secure environment

The Hut Group is the UK’s leading, multi-website online retailer with rapidly growing international operations. The company’s websites are a crucial part of the business and need to be kept up and running at all times. The Hut Group is therefore using vCloud Air to make sure it’s infrastructure is flexible and scalable – giving the IT team the ability to get more capacity during peak periods and to reduce it down during quieter periods, so that customers have the same responsiveness and experience even when the sites are at their busiest.

“(DRaaS) enables us to grow faster than we are growing currently, and really enables us to be more efficient and flexible in what we are doing. Instead of having to keep two different data centers up and running, to ensure there is an up or down, or cold or hot data center, this enables us to ensure that it is the efficiency that we gain by only having to do the exercise once.”

— Schalk Van der Merwe, IT Director, The Hut Group

The Oberoi Group

The luxury hotel and tourism operator needed to improve returns on its technology assets. Implementing VMware Horizon View with VMware vSphere has reduced operating costs and enabled centralized control and maintenance of desktops and servers, while enabling employees to continue providing high-quality services to guests and corporate clients

In addition, vSphere Data Protection Advanced increased reliability of backup and disaster recovery systems.

“The organization has been crying out for quicker implementation of new applications. Using vSphere with Operations Management, we can bring up new virtual hosts and deploy applications much more rapidly than in the past.”

— Paul Reed, Director of IT, The Waddington Group

TiAuto (Pty) Ltd.

Full visibility, improved performance and ability to further sweat IT assets

TiAuto was looking for a system that would enable it to deploy a charge back functionality across all of its seven divisions. It needed a system that would give the IT team a view of what each department was running, how much hardware they were using and in short summarize if the systems / servers it had in place were in fact healthy. After rolling out vSOM, the company had an instant view of its some 120 virtual machines and the benefits to the business were immediate as the TiAuto IT department could instantly identify which machines hadn’t been provisioned properly as well as where there was fault or capacity in its systems which could then be optimized.

“vSOM has been fantastic for the business as we can now benefit from adding more virtual machines on what we already have as we can resize our existing environment without running the risk of oversizing the storage. From a management perspective IT can now provide our executive team a visual report that shows them exactly how much hardware we use across the group. It goes as granular as defining what each hardware component is doing and in turn we can justify what we need and can qualify each infrastructural investment.”

— David van Vuuren, Group ICT Manager, TiAuto

Times Internet Ltd

Times Internet, the digital content delivery organisation of Times India, embarked on an aggressive Private Cloud deployment to deliver an elastic, scalable and highly reactive IT infrastructure. 3 datacentres were consolidated to two, and 800 physical servers consolidated to 100 VMs, all within months. With over 30 million unique visits every month, the Times Internet cloud brings high availability to media and content distribution.

"Two of the reasons for cloud were elasticity and scale. On Times of India if there is big news, you will see traffic growth to about 200 to 300%. At that point in time, if you didn’t have elastic infrastructure, you would have trouble in scaling that operation."

— Gautam Sinha, Chief Operating Officer & CTO

Tribune Media

Business Transformation at Tribune Media

Tribune Media has over 42 owned or operated TV Stations, WGN Cable, Gracenote for Entertainment Metadata and Tribune Movie Studios, and is one of the nation’s largest independent broadcasters. VMware has really helped Tribune Media stop the conversations around technology, focusing instead on the outcomes it needs to operate the business. Now they can concentrate on increasing security capabilities, decreasing costs and responding to customer needs faster. Tribune Media can grow the business and go after new markets, and that translates into more revenue per customer.

“VMware has been really critical to drive the fluidity back to the business. My head of engineering has literally a saying over his door. It says, ‘If we can’t automate it we don’t need it’. If we deploy an application in our infrastructure to automate processes, we give that time back. What ends up showing up to the business is our ability to do more projects and do them faster, cheaper and better.”

— David Giambruno, SVP and CIO, Tribune Media

Ziv Medical Center

Ziv Medical Center in Zefat previously had various distributed systems across the hospital and they wanted to unify them using a single solution which will be easy to manage, allow them to gain a unified view of all the systems simply and easily, and, of course, will be highly resilient. That's why they chose VMware View. The VMware view solution that they implemented at the zivMedical Center consists of two resilient storage systems that work in a cluster. This system caters for around 1,000 work stations. It's an environment that works as a 'Kiosk'. Their users enjoy a new work environment, a very fast one, with excellent response times. As a user logs in, he gets exactly what he needs. It's an environment that goes everywhere with him, it's dedicated to him - and roams with him. Doctors for example, may work in several different wards. They may finish work in one ward, log out, move to the next ward, log in - and receive a new environment that is adapted to their exact needs.

"The Ziv Medical Center in Zefat was founded roughly a century ago. It serves around 150,000 residents in the upper Galilee region, among them cities such as Karmiel, Kiryat Shmona, and Hatzor. This is the northernmost hospital in Israel and it therefore also often serves the IDF. They operate 1,000 PCs, 700 printers, and 80 servers, which are mostly VMware's. The vast majority of systems in the hospital are computerized. This includes labs, ORs, X Ray facilities, external infirmaries, hospital admissions, the trauma center and more. Our IT unit employs 11 people. One needs to understand that the systems we manage are life-supporting. These systems must be constantly up and running".

— Zion Levy, Head of IT Department, Ziv Medical Center

Here how MTS, biggest operator in the fixed mobile business in Russia managed to reduce basically the overall cost of IT by around 50% and the overall opex reduced by 50% using VMware solution.

Hiermee heeft ASVZ het "any place, any time" en bijna "any device" gerealiseerd.

— Leon Urbanus, Hoofd ICT, ASVZ

Capaciteit is dus ‘on-the-fly’ beschikbaar.

— Frank Keessen, ICT manager Boekel De Nerée

— Larik-Jan Verschuren, CTO Fundaments

Gemeente Zoetermeer

— Richard Thiele, ICT-projectleider, gemeente Zoetermeer
