Edogawa City Council consolidated its physical servers into the Edogawa Shared Information Platform (e-SHIP) some time ago. But only with the deployment of VMware vCenter Operations Manager was it able to get full benefit from this investment; now it is able to utilize resources and identify and resolve problems within this virtual environment much more effectively. With infrastructure systems virtualized, the council is now planning to virtualize all 4,000 workstations across its various offices by incorporating the back-end server resources that were freed up.
“VMware vCenter Operations Manager is a highly effective tool for optimizing the virtual infrastructure across all the council’s offices. It improves reliability and performance, and supports our efforts to rationalize our hardware.”
EDS Turns to VMware Server Virtualization to Support Australian Customers
“The increasing maturity of virtualization and the growing support from independent software vendors is helping fuel deployment of VMware virtualization across production environments. This means more businesses are redeploying or disposing of inefficient hardware and consolidating their data center infrastructure onto multiple virtual server environments, thus contributing to a reduction in power consumption.”
The educational institution was looking for a reliable solution to back up critical data. They chose vSphere Data Protection because it was easy to use and integrated with their vSphere platform.
“It is very important that our backup and recovery solution be well integrated with our VMware infrastructure.”
Targets set with regard to virtualisation • establishing the central infrastructure • all virtualised applications shall be installed on this infrastructure • catastrophy-proof operational safety • cost eff ective operations Results achieved with VMware’s solution • agressive virtualisation (e.g. 170 virtual machines running on the 3 blade servers of the Microsoft cluster) • in general 40-50 virtual machines running on the other clusters on each physical host • resource utilization of more than 50 percent in general (70-80 percent on certain clusters) • more than 500 virtualised systems • the performance of the SAP company management system increased from twice 2000 SAPS to 12000 SAPS • more than 10 million Forints savings yearly in energy consumption • 15-20 percent reduction of licence costs • serving business demand in 1 week instead of 4-6 weeks • catastrophy-proof operational safety by means of the virtualised systems to be moved between host servers of each site
”Due to the virtualised and centralised infrastructure, we save more than ten million forints yearly on energy costs.”
Exceptional reliability had to be part of the plan, however, when it came to virtualizing a number of customer-facing quality assurance (QA) and user-acceptance testing (UAT) applications. For this set of highly visible applications, Stratus ftServer systems and VMware Infrastructure 3 were chosen to assure the flawless operation the company sought.
"Stratus ftServer systems and VMware are an ideal mission critical combination."
EMC implements VMware IT Business Management and IT Benchmarking to expand financial transparency and to deliver a true Bill of IT. The path to financial transparency and business insight is a dynamic journey. EMC needed a better solution that adapted with their changing needs, VMware ITBM provided that solution.

EPAM centralised infrastructure management in the first phase of the development process aiming at the establishment of an IT environment that would adapt more flexibly to business requirements. In the second phase of the developments in the summer of 2006, EPAM Systems decided to virtualise the development and test environments established for the projects. Thanks to VMware-based virtualisation, we are able to set up the development environment of a starting project several magnitudes faster, just under 1 hour instead of several days or weeks. The other big advantage of virtualisation is that development managers can take a snapshot of the environment before testing a new version or service pack of the software under development or before verifying the version compatibility of a new database manager. EPAM in recent years has achieved two-digit growth in revenues and employed staffs - which are also reflected in the cost of IT.
„The snapshot function of VMware provides a high degree of security for development work. Using this system, it is faster and easier to test our software and we are able to provide an even higher standard of service to our customers. While our earlier infrastructure may have limited this process, our virtualised environment has become the drive behind our business.”
EPFL (École Polytechnique Fédérale De Lausanne)
École polytechnique fédérale de Lausanne (EPFL) is a Federal Institute of Technology based in Lausanne in Switzerland, they have over 9,000 students and 4,500 staff members. EPFL needed to design, implement and maintain a centralized virtual infrastructure to meet the needs of the entire school. They also needed to reduce total cost of ownership and lower power consumption. vCenter Operations has transformed the way their library storage requirements are supported enabling effective predictions for capacity and a hybrid cloud model has been adopted to provide the ability to extend their infrastructure into the public cloud. As well as a 33% reduction in TCO and 80% reduction in power consumption, EPFL have also experienced increased capacity and optimization through the effective management of their cloud infrastructure.
“We invested in vCenter Operations to support our large infrastructure of 500 VMs and 40 hosts. It has enabled us to predict capacity needs and to easily locate any performance issues.”
The competence gained during the implementation of VMware vSphere and the comments we have received from our customers, have enabled Ergomedia to launch public cloud services, based on the VMware vCloud Director. Limitations in Hyper-V drove them to choose VMware to deliver a cloud for their Microsoft Applications.
“In our computing cloud, we provide customers with access to Microsoft applications, but it's VMware who helped us guarantee the top availability and stability of the entire environment. The use of the VMware virtualization software improves and accelerates our work. We do not need to employ additional administrator although the number of virtual machine keeps on growing.”
