Number of Workloads
How many workloads will run in each virtualized environment now or in the near future?
VMware vSphere environments can run both existing workloads (consolidated from physical servers) and new workloads. Typically each workload and its OS are encapsulated inside a
virtual machine.
Select the range that best represents the total number of workloads that will be concurrently running at any given time in your environment, taking into consideration room for future growth.
A virtual machine is a tightly isolated software container that can run its own operating systems and workloads as if it were a physical computer or server. A virtual machine behaves exactly like a physical computer and contains it own virtual (ie, software-based) CPU, RAM, hard disk and network interface card (NIC).
An operating system can't tell the difference between a virtual machine and a physical machine, nor can workloads or other computers on a network. Even the virtual machine thinks it is a "real" computer. Nevertheless, a virtual machine is composed entirely of software and contains no hardware components whatsoever. As a result, virtual machines offer a number of distinct advantages over physical hardware.
Availability
What do you need to maintain availability of the workloads to be virtualized?
Ensuring highly available IT services has never been more challenging. Availability in virtual environments varies in scope from eliminating downtime during planned outages or physical failures to providing rapid and reliable disaster recovery management. Select the option(s) that best describes your present or anticipated availability requirements.
Disaster recovery automation protects your IT assets and keeps your business up and running when a disaster strikes. VMware vCenter Site Recovery Manager provides reliable automated site recovery and migration processes that replace traditional error-prone manual runbooks.
In the case of application failures, VMware vSphere App HA (High Availability) provides monitoring and automated remediation by restarting the application either in the same virtual machine or on another virtual machine in the same cluster.
In the case of physical failures, VMware vSphere Fault Tolerance provides instantaneous non-disruptive failover with zero downtime and zero data loss.
In the case of physical failures, VMware vSphere High Availability will restart affected virtual machines on other production servers with spare capacity. While in the event of operating system failures, the affected virtual machines are automatically restarted on the same physical server. At the same time, VMware vSphere Data Protection provides fast backup and retrieval of virtual machine images.
Planned maintenance for both server and storage can be performed with no disruption to operations.
VMware vSphere vMotion eliminates application downtime from planned server maintenance by migrating running virtual machines between hosts.
VMware vSphere Storage vMotion avoids application downtime for planned storage maintenance by migrating live VM disk files within and across storage arrays.
Operations Management
What do you need to better manage your virtual environment?
Virtualization has changed IT management. Traditional IT management tools tied to dedicated infrastructure may no longer be sufficient in a dynamic private cloud environment. VMware products go beyond traditional IT management tools by ensuring service levels and compliance while optimizing operations for efficiency and cost.
Select the option(s) that best describes your present or anticipated requirements.
VMware vRealize Operations Manager helps anticipate performance bottlenecks and provide visibility into the health of your IT infrastructure with patented self-learning analytics, allowing you to reduce application downtime by 36% and reduce diagnostics and problem resolution time by 26%.
VMware vRealize Operations Manager ensures that capacity consumption is rightsized to provide the most efficient use of virtualized resources and that capacity usage is tracked to avoid future shortfalls (what-if scneario analysis), improving capacity utilization by 40% and consolidation ratio by 37%.
VMware vRealize Infrastructure Navigator automatically discovers application services and maps their dependencies, giving you visibility into the application services running over the virtual machine infrastructure and their relationships for day-to-day operational management.
VMware vRealize Configuration Manager automatically detects changes and ensures that those changes are in full compliance with both internal defined policies and industry regulatory standards, such as Sarbanes-Oxley, PCI DSS and HIPAA.
Automation and Provisioning
What do you need to enhance agility to meet line of business requirements?
Automated provisioning is imperative for IT organizations to keep up with the current speed and agility of service delivery while maintaining flexibility of service deployment.
Select the option(s) that best describes your present or anticipated requirements.
VMware vRealize Automation allows you to quickly provision new infrastructure in minutes and easily evolve existing infrastructure into scalable cloud services.
VMware vRealize Automation allows you to ensure policy enforcement on the placement, approvals, and resource allocation of services, providing full control over service lifecycle.
VMware vRealize Automation provides you with "Advanced Service Designer" to help you create any new service, such as email provisioning or onboarding services, and publish “X as a service “ to the catalog for on-demand self-service access. The framework ensures that all new services benefit from consistent governance and lifecycle management.
VMware vRealize Automation allows you to define and create application blueprints with simple drag-and-drop interface. The application blueprints give cloud users standardized service environment adhering to IT policy and flexibility to deploy applications according to business needs.
Virtual Infrastructure Networking and Security
What level of networking and security do you need for your virtual infrastructure?
Moving towards the Software-Defined Data Center (SDDC), IT organizations gain higher efficiency and agility by bringing virtualization beyond computing resources to networking and security. Virtualization in networking and security expands from network abstraction to software-defined networking with a broad range of services in a single solution, including virtual firewall, VPN, load balancing and VXLAN extended networks.
Select the option that best describes your present or anticipated service level requirements.
VMware vSphere Distributed Switch provides a centralized and streamlined provisioning, administration and monitoring of virtual networking across multiple hosts as well as enhanced network monitoring and troubleshooting capabilities. This also enables the use of (optional) third party virtual switches to extend familiar physical network features and controls to virtual networks.
VMware vCloud Networking and Security provides software defined networking and security built into the virtual infrastructure. With VXLAN, a unified pool of network capacity can be optimally segmented into logical networks supporting specific applications and can grow or shrink along with those applications. You can add security, load balancing and other gateway services to the virtual network infrastructure.
Shared Storage
Do you have, or plan to have, a shared storage environment?
vSphere's advanced features dramatically improve availability and uptime of applications. Many of these
featuresrequire shared storage such as fibre channel SAN, iSCSI SAN, NAS, and vSphere Storage Appliance (VSA)
Example of features that require shared storage:
- VMware vSphere High Availability- Automated restart in case of server failure.
- VMware vSphere Fault Tolerance- Provide zero downtime, zero data loss continuous availability against physical server failures.
- VMware vSphere DRS- Align resource allocation to applications with business priorities, across a group of servers
- VMware vSphere Storage vMotion- Live migrate running virtual machines from one storage location to another with no disruption or downtime
VMware vSphere API for Array Integration allows you to perform specific storage operations - such as offload block copy and block zeroing, support dead space reclamation and out of space warnings in thin provisioned arrays and support NAS as well as block based storage - to supported disk arrays to boost performance with less CPU, memory and storage bandwith.
VMware vSphere API for Storage Awareness allows you to build a modular storage architecture that supports integration with third-party storage vendors - multipath software features. Storage vendors can develop plug-ins for virtualized environment to determine the best path selection, as well as leveraging parallel paths to increase performance and reliability of I/O from the vSphere host to the storage array.
Workload Performance
What do you need to guarantee workload performance?
Ensuring the highest levels of workload performance has always been one of IT’s main objectives. VMware products provide features that help ensure performance levels and even exceed that of unvirtualized, physical environments.
Select the option(s) that best describes your present or anticipated workload performance requirements.
With VMware vSphere DRS (Distributed Resources Scheduler), you can align resource allocation to applications with business priorities, across a group of servers, and balance workloads to achieve maximum performance.
With VMware vSphere DPM (Distributed Power Management), you can optimize power consumption dynamically within a cluster by placing hosts in standby mode - cut power and cooling costs by 20% - when demand for resources is low and ensuring enough power when demand for resources is high to keep your services up and running.
With VMware vSphere Storage DRS (Distributed Resources Scheduler), you can make sure virtual machines data is assigned the optimal storage location initially and continuously balance storage space usage and storage I/O load while avoiding resource bottlenecks to meet application service levels.
With VMware vSphere Network I/O Controls, you can continuously monitor I/O load over the network and dynamically allocate available I/O resources according to specific business needs, assuring that I/O resources are always available for your business-critical applications.
With VMware vSphere Storage I/O Controls, you can prioritize I/O access to shared storage pool according to different service levels. It continuously monitors the I/O load of a storage volume and dynamically allocate available I/O resources to virtual machines according to business needs.
With VMware vSphere Host Profiles, you can reduce the time needed to setup new hosts, ensure consistency and compliance, and apply changes to multiple hosts. Once created, the host profile can be attached to one or more vSphere hosts or clusters, in which the host configuration is compared against the host profile and any deviations can be corrected automatically.
With VMware vSphere Auto Deploy, you can facilitate rapid server deployment by leveraging the network boot capabilities of x86 servers together with the small footprint of the vSphere hypervisor. vSphere hosts are network-booted from a central Auto Deploy server where the ESXi software is installed directly into the server’s memory.
With VMware vSphere Flash Read Cache, you can accelerate your workload performance by up to 5-10 times by enabling read caching capability on virtualized pool of server-side flash resources.
Greater than 2 CPUs per server
Will any physical servers have more than 2 sockets/processors?
VMware vSphere is able to run on servers with multiple processors. However some editions of vSphere designed for small IT environments are restricted to two-socket servers. Indicate below whether servers with more than two sockets/processors will be used.
Select "unsure" if you do not want this to limit the recommended vSphere edition.
Data Center Infrastructure
What type of business environment are you interested in virtualizing?
VMware offers distinct virtualization solutions for centralized corporate data center and for remote sites, such as regional offices, retail stores, branch offices, and manufacturing sites.
Remote sites/branch offices and corporate data centers typically have very different IT needs. If you are interested in virtualizing both your datacenter and remote sites/branch offices, we recommend you complete the questionnaire independently for both use cases.
