How VMware IT Sees the Cloud

VMware IT CIO, Bask Iyer, describes the private, hybrid and public cloud.

VMware IT: Learn from our Experience of Using VMware Products

At VMware, we use our own products and technology to solve our most critical challenges—the same ones faced daily by every IT organization. As part of our “VMware on VMware” initiative, we use the tools we believe unlock the potential of cloud computing: shifting IT processes, the Software-Defined Data Center, hybrid cloud and business mobility. We share our experience and insights as we pursue fully realized cloud and business mobility.

A new model for IT

IT must offer self-service based on a consumption model to become more strategic to the business.

The Software-Defined Data Center (SDDC)

The true differentiation of an IT organization is its intimacy with its own business.

Shifting People and Processes

True business transformation cannot happen without a significant shift in people and processes, creating the blueprint for the organizational structure. People and processes also dictate the certifications and education required at the different stages of an organization’s cloud maturity.

Within VMware IT, our people- and process-driven approach has fueled our cloud successes. With the ability to focus less on infrastructure and more on services, people in IT are changing how they work. The focus on services over infrastructure also changes IT’s relationship with business users. Thankfully, the days of taking three to six months to implement a project are over. Today, IT teams work as a single team, using Agile or Scrum methodologies to rapidly deliver a service in a short timeframe and iterate quickly to improve and add functionality to the service.

The new mantra is to get something out there as quickly as possible, see how it meets business needs and refine it continuously to mature and adapt to business users’ requirements .

Continuous Delivery for DevOps

Using vRealize Code Stream, VMware IT was able to slash release cycle time from 12 hours to 3 hours. People adapted to new processes to take full advantage of the vRealize Code Stream capabilities.

IT Architecture Governance for the Cloud

At the same time IT is leveraging the cloud for “burst” capacity, there is a closer partnership between IT and business users. Because service catalogs enable self-service and self-provisioning, IT departments are now shifting their emphasis to governance, integration, security and business continuity.

Private Cloud: Automating Testing and Streamlining Application Development

VMware IT deployed its own private cloud based on the vCloud Suite. In this model, the VMware development and operations teams are one tenant using the cloud to automate dev test provisioning and streamline application development. This video will show you how automated provisioning has improved how these teams work together.

Private Cloud: Agility and Cost Savings

The VMWare IT team recently deployed a private cloud using the vCloud Suite. This video describes how the VMware IT management team was able to increase its focus on business agility while lowering IT costs by utilizing the private cloud.

The End of Physical Infrastructure

IT has evolved. In the past, we were primarily responsive—build this, fix that—but today IT needs to proactively help businesses build better products and market them to customers. So how do we devote more time to provisioning business users with new capabilities and less time on infrastructure? Part of the answer is the hybrid cloud. The VMware Cross-Cloud Architecture™ extends our hybrid cloud strategy with new public and private cloud capabilities that enable our customers to run, manage, connect, and secure their applications across clouds and devices in a common operating environment. As the world’s most complete and capable hybrid cloud architecture, the VMware Cross-Cloud Architecture enables consistent deployment models, security policies, visibility, and governance for all applications, running on premises and off, regardless of the underlying cloud or hypervisor.

Built on the foundation of the Software-Defined Data Center, where compute, storage, network and security are all virtualized, the hybrid cloud manages both on-premises and cloud workloads, automated by software for nearly instant provisioning of project environments and automatically scaling production environments when needed.

IT can now easily manage and move workloads between data centers and clouds from a single platform for maximum business agility. With our hybrid cloud offerings, we can now provision new workloads or move existing workloads between on-premises private clouds to the public cloud, and back again as needed, using a unified platform to secure and manage clouds. With increased agility and efficiency, we have a lot more time to help our business stakeholders solve their problems and take advantage of new opportunities in the mobile-cloud era.

Within VMware IT, we have developed our own Software-Defined Data Center in our on-premises private cloud and public cloud to build and test software-defined networks and architect the methods to ensure the security of these environments. With the hybrid cloud, users reap the benefits of choice, flexibility and agility and gain the ability to run applications at will and without compromise. Our Customer One program gives us insight into real-world use case scenarios, further enabling us to validate and optimize our solutions.

Cloud Management Solution Vision and Strategy

VMware NSX in a Multitenant Cloud

VMware’s Internal Private Cloud gave the team an opportunity to deploy NSX in a multi-tenant environment at scale. Other benefits of operationalizing NSX included ease of administration, rapid network deployment and self-service provisioning.

How to Buy a Cloud

As the cloud economy matures, VMware is evolving new business models to enable on-demand purchasing of cloud products and services. We’re also driving new revenue opportunities for channel partners through our subscription-based delivery platform (SDP). SDP allows partners to have a flexible way to configure cloud solutions for customers and unifies the customer experience across products, services and customer support.

Using the Power of Software-Defined Storage (Virtual SAN) for Managing VMware View Desktops

How do you ensure a solution is ready to support a production environment while managing risk to the business? This is the same question in every IT organization. To address this challenge, we deployed VMware Virtual SAN as part of our Customer One initiative, an IT partnership with VMware Research and Development and Global Services and Support designed to literally put VMware IT in the customer’s shoes prior to the general release of a product.

Disaster Recovery Ensures Application Availability

VMware IT recently completed a phase in the ongoing journey to mature its disaster recovery process. Starting with mapping applications to infrastructure, the team gained insight into the amount and location of resource consumption. Automating the application release process helps ensure executable disaster recovery.

Mobility Powers IT Innovation

Business mobility is key to unlocking the opportunities of the cloud, and success in this area will come from bringing the consumer experience into the enterprise. An example is smartphones; virtually no training is required because the technology is so intuitive. In the enterprise, however, interfaces are usually much harder to navigate.

Business mobility gives organizations the power to be more competitive. It allows organizations to work more effectively and connect with customers in ways that once seemed impossible. Today IT is challenged to span the bridge between enterprise and mobile-cloud applications while meeting user expectations that they will be able to securely access their work resources on any device. We must migrate toward more mobility in the enterprise and enable users to move seamlessly between devices. Business mobility is a platform IT can use to innovate in new ways and is a transformative influence today.

IT Delivers AirWatch for Simplified Internal Mobile Connections

VMware uses its own AirWatch for low-cost, policy-compliant mobile device management, data sharing and collaboration. End users can more easily work from any device, anywhere while IT gains an application deployment platform to securely deliver mobile applications.

Mirage Streamlines IT for Upgrades and Desktop Management

We used Mirage to efficiently upgrade users to Windows 7 while simultaneously improving image and desktop management. Mirage provides centralized image management for Windows desktops with enhanced levels of backup and OS migration capabilities. It also delivers an easy way to save on costs while delivering needed services—all with minimal business disruption.

Horizon Workspace—One Desktop, Many Devices, Streamlined IT

In the post-PC era, people use multiple screens during the workday—the typical worker uses up to twenty applications daily. VMware IT faced the challenge of delivering reliable access while ensuring that they enforced IT governance. Workspace Portal gives users access to the data and applications they need from any device through a private cloud. This ensures the security of company information and gives users all the apps they need through a single URL, eliminating multiple passwords.

Driving Lower IT Costs and a Better End-User Experience with Horizon 6

VMware needed to get Horizon 6 into production in order to have real-world use cases for general availability and to support the rollout of its Horizon suite of applications. VMware also wanted to ensure that the process of upgrading Horizon 6 was simple. The company put its own IT organization through exactly what the customer will go through, and asked them to take careful notes.
