Product Summary

Virtual SAN 6.2 is radically simple, enterprise-class, sofware-defined storage and is a key component of VMware Hyper-Converged Software (VMware HCS). VMware HCS transforms data center infrastructure with a simple, high-performance and cost-effective software architecture that converges compute, storage, and networking on industry-standard x86 building blocks. Virtual SAN, a critical part to VMware HCS, is uniquely embedded in the hypervisor and delivers flash-optimized, elastically-scalable, hyper-converged storage for vSphere virtual machines.

Virtual SAN offers:

  • Radically Simple Storage: Virtual SAN streamlines storage provisioning for vSphere environments— storage can be provisioned in just a few clicks in the standard vSphere Web Client. Automation through VM-centric policies ensures SLAs can be set or changed on the fly. Integrated management capabilities simplify monitoring, troubleshooting and reporting.
  • High Performance: It is the best performing hyper-converged storage with up to 100,000 IOPS per host, designed to handle the most demanding enterprise applications.
  • Enterprise Readiness: Virtual SAN delivers advanced storage services for virtual machines including flash-optimized performance, built-in distributed RAID, Quality of Service (QoS), and storage efficiency through deduplication, compression and erasure coding. It also integrates natively with vSphere High Availability (HA), Fault Tolerance (FT) and vSphere Replication for asynchronous replication with up to five minute RPO. Virtual SAN Stretched clusters deliver site-level protection with zero RPO.
  • Linear Scalability: Virtual SAN delivers predictable, elastic and non-disruptive scaling of storage resources—eliminating costly forklift upgrades, bulk purchases and overprovisioning.

Product Enhancements

With the rapid adoption of all-flash storage, Virtual SAN 6.2 is focused on delivering the future of flash today with all-flash performance for less than competing hybrid solutions.

The fourth-generation release further improves total cost of ownership with storage efficiency features such as deduplication and compression, along with enhanced automation capabilities such as quality of service controls.

The most significant new capabilities of Virtual SAN 6.2 are:

  • Deduplication and Compression: Reduce storage footprint and capacity costs with up to 7x storage efficiency while having minimal impact on CPU and memory overhead.
  • Erasure Coding: Increase usable storage capacity by up to 2x while keeping data resiliency unchanged, capable of tolerating one or two failures with single parity or double parity protection. Also known as RAID 5 and RAID 6.
  • Quality of Service: Control, limit, and monitor the IOPS consumed by each virtual machine. Eliminate noisy neighbor issues by preventing a virtual machine from monopolizing storage IOPS at the cost of other virtual machines.
  • Support for SAP: Support for key business critical applications from SAP.

VMware is also announcing a technology direction around investigation into a Virtual SAN for VMware Photon solution that could provide a scalable, high-performance storage platform for containers and cloud native applications.
