Excellence in Care

Baystate Health cares for more than one million patients annually and employs 12,000 people, making it one of the largest healthcare systems in New England. To maintain its leadership in the face of an evolving healthcare industry, Baystate rebuilt its IT infrastructure to improve overall efficiency, optimize performance and availability, and control rising costs while offering healthcare providers and administrators secure anytime, anywhere access to the network from any device. To achieve this, Baystate relied on VMware vSphere, VMware Virtual SAN, VMware NSX, and VMware Horizon Enterprise.

Baystate Health Case Study

Baystate Health and VMware

Critical Cost Savings

By virtualizing and hyperconverging its data centers, Baystate saved more than $3.5 million in construction costs alone. The organization can also avoid large, one-time purchases/upgrades such as a $1 million per new fiber channel SAN to support growth. Instead, it can scale its data centers horizontally by adding nodes to the cluster as needed with VMware Virtual SAN. In addition, Baystate’s virtual desktop environment has shed the cost of maintaining 12,000 computers.

Caring for Patients—and Data

Baystate consolidated its two data centers into three (active-active-active) smaller, less costly, hyperconverged facilities. With data now being managed centrally through the VMware NSX/vSAN/Horizon platform, Baystate no longer worries about data on a disk that can be lost or stolen—security breaches that would be devastating to a healthcare organization. Instead, Baystate has reduced security risks and simplified compliance with privacy regulations. VMware NSX also gives Baystate more control over its data thanks to micro-segmentation capabilities.

What Baystate Health has to say about us

“Healthcare is under tremendous pressure to reduce costs, especially operational costs. With VMware NSX, we are able to create a more fluid, liquid, automated data center that allows us to do more with less.”
