A More Secure, Modern Enterprise Takes Center Stage at VMworld 2019 Europe

VMworld is an industry event that has everybody sitting on the edge of their seat, waiting to hear what is next.

I’ve been attending and speaking at VMworld events for the best part of a decade, and every year I talk to customers, partners and employees about why this year is going to be the best yet and what the key takeaways will be. There are a couple of key areas right now that for me highlight why we continue to take centre stage.

We recently welcomed the Carbon Black Team into our VMware family. Together, we have started a new journey that will provide our customers with a modern, intrinsic security cloud platform for any application, running on any cloud, and on any device. This provides an opportunity to build security into the underlying fabric of the compute and device stack and make the world safe from cyberattacks (or to help customers stop sophisticated attacks and accelerate response).

Secondly, our ongoing strategy to support customers that want to run everything they need to deliver the applications at speed that differentiates their business and enhances the user experience in today’s hyper-connected digital world.

You want to run applications in a cloud? An application that spans multiple clouds? A PaaS based solution that scales on demand? Containers natively on ESX? VMs and containers side by side securely at the edge? Manage Kubernetes wherever you need it? We can enable you to do it all.

The announcements we recap below explain that strategy in more detail and what else is making headlines at this year’s VMworld 2019:

VMware Advances VMware Tanzu Portfolio to Accelerate Adoption of Kubernetes in the Enterprise

VMware announced rapid advancement of the VMware Tanzu portfolio of products and services that we unveiled at VMworld 2019 US, which is designed to transform the way enterprises build, run and manage software on Kubernetes. We unveiled a beta program for both Project Pacific and VMware Tanzu Mission Control(1), and outlined the details of a new VMware Cloud Native Master Services Competency that will enable current and future partners to architect a Kubernetes-based platform supported by complementary technologies from the cloud native ecosystem for the continuous delivery of applications.

VMware Cloud on AWS Helps Customers Across the Region Migrate and Modernize Applications

VMware Cloud on AWS will be launching in the AWS EU (Stockholm) region, bringing the total number of available global regions in Europe to five and globally to 17 in just over two years. We expanded our VMware HCX capabilities to include OS-Assisted migration – the ability to migrate non-vSphere workloads such as applications running in RedHat OpenStack/KVM, and Microsoft Hyper-V environments to VMware Cloud on AWS. VMware also announced its new VMware Cloud Director service which will bring the proven and intrinsically secure multi-tenant capabilities of VMware vCloud Director to VMware Cloud on AWS, allowing Managed Service Providers (MSPs) to share instances and overall costs across multiple tenants.

Project Path: Multi-Cloud Service Delivery and Operations for Cloud Providers

A tech preview, Project Path will help cloud providers and Managed Service Providers adopt new business models that will bring new value, revenue and improved margins to their cloud businesses. Project Path will build on and expand the foundational capabilities of the VMware Cloud Provider Platform – VMware vCloud Director and VMware Cloud Provider Hub – and be rolled out in phases to unify management and operations across all VMware cloud endpoints. These include the partner’s own cloud; VMware SDDCs running in AWS, Azure, Google Cloud, IBM Cloud, and Oracle Cloud; and native public clouds. Cloud providers will be able to deliver a suite of services – self-service multi-tenant IaaS, containers, migration, backup, disaster recovery, object storage, database as a service, security, application templates, and more – on any VMware cloud endpoint. Additionally, Project Path will help unify cloud provider’s operations such as customer management, customer usage, billing, and customer support across all VMware cloud endpoints. In support of this strategy, VMware also announced the new SaaS-based VMware Cloud Director service, VMware Cloud Provider Hub, VMware vCloud Availability 3.5 and availability of the Bitnami Community Catalogue for VMware Cloud Provider Partners.

Project Maestro to Help Communication Service Providers (CSPs) Accelerate Operational Agility with Unified Orchestration and Automation Across Networks and Multi-Cloud

VMware unveiled a tech preview of Project Maestro, a telco cloud orchestrator built to help communications service providers (CSPs) accelerate the time-to-market of modern network functions and services across clouds, from core to edge, and from private to public clouds. With this cloud-first orchestration solution, CSPs will be able to build and automate network services that span across a wider variety of network function formats, enabling interoperability and optimizing their operations across every layer of the NFV and Telco Cloud architecture. The telco cloud orchestrator will deliver operational efficiency at scale to ultimately help CSPs accelerate time-to-market of new services, mitigate the cost of managing ever more complex networks, and improve customer experiences.

VMware Workspace ONE Delivers Day Zero Employee Experiences, Enabling IT and HR to Accelerate New Hire Time to Productivity

VMware unveiled new Workspace ONE Intelligent Hub innovations aimed at further improving the employee experience. Workspace ONE supports new day zero experiences to more securely provide new hires access to useful resources in Intelligent Hub such as company directory, intranet, and benefits information before their start date. In addition, new hires will be able to use Intelligent Hub to complete certain onboarding workflows, such as selecting technology to be delivered to the employee on their first day. Also announced is the availability of VMware Horizon Services for Multi-Cloud (announced at VMworld 2019 US). These services help IT admins simplify management of virtual desktops and apps from on-prem to cloud with unique advancements in VMware Horizon.

Drastically Simplify Your Security Environment

The explosion of applications and endpoints is resulting in companies have to rethink their approach to security and how to safeguard their applications, running on any cloud, and on any device. We believe we can help companies and their employees by making security intrinsic to your infrastructure to help simplify the overwhelming complex approach most companies take today.

VMware’s strategy is to remove the complexity inherent with security today and deliver security that is intrinsic across the distributed enterprise. By focusing on the known good behavior of applications and delivering a platform spanning the five control points of security—network, endpoint, identity, cloud, and analytics—VMware helps customers significantly reduce the risk to critical applications, sensitive data, and users. Ultimately, VMware will help turn the industry away from the conventional norms in security of detect, report, and respond, and towards this new model that empowers customers to implement security that delivers automated, pervasive, and proactive protection to critical assets apps and users regardless of where they reside in the enterprise.

In closing, the explosion of information crossing multiple clouds to and from an infinite number of devices and sensors has brought complexity, security and scalability issues. To accelerate app development, we need to simplify operations. VMware’s digital foundation enables businesses to modernise apps: create, run, manage, connect and intrinsically protect them, across any cloud, at speed. We are helping businesses engage employees and customers to optimise competitiveness for today and tomorrow and create positive social impact.

Through consistent infrastructure, consistent operations and intrinsic security, the digital foundation enables organisations to innovate while optimising their IT investment.

This is why VMware enables you to run all the things.
