Importance of the Meeting Experience

As the leader of the global Audio-Visual team at VMware, I try to infuse my team members with the same passion, energy, and enthusiasm I have for developing meaningful and progressive technology solutions that support our global meeting and event experiences. These efforts ultimately break down barriers created by physical distance, cultural communication, diversity, and personal limitations. And I love connecting people with the technology that enables a more productive experience.

Charlene Huang

Curious About the Roots of Everything

As a database architect at VMware, I take a straightforward approach to challenges. I’m endlessly curious about the root cause of any problem—from disaster recovery to designing highly available architecture—and how IT can solve it in the simplest, most efficient way. I care about this because enterprises tend to overcomplicate solutions rather than look at the big picture of how customers actually use the technology. This can lead to delivering quick fixes instead of long-term answers and prevention.

Mehul Patel

Manage Change by Preparing for Change

The key components to managing technology change are delivering quality IT processes at speed, eliminating redundant/time-consuming tasks, reducing overhead and doing it all securely. That’s a big part of my job as Senior Manager, IT Applications. But another significant part is helping DevOps become an organizational/cultural change agent. And that’s what makes what I do so exciting—I get to both create change solutions and shepherd them to make employees/external customers as efficient and productive as possible.

Scott Tilney

Technology Without Passion is ... Just Work

On paper, I use machine learning and micro-services to ensure internal/external end users are their most productive. But I’ve discovered that what truly drives innovation, better solutions and better products is a passion and curiosity for the work. I actually love coming to work (!) as a Member of Technical Staff, Emerging Technologies, knowing I can think out of the box to make things simpler, easier, and even more fun so people enjoy the technology instead of resenting it.

More than ever the intricacies of modern IT infrastructure emphasize the need for comprehensive monitoring and management solutions. vRealize Operations (vROps) is an essential part of the toolbox that VMware IT uses to ensure high availability in one of the world’s largest Private Clouds. In this session we will focus on the value vROps can provide to the different roles within an IT organization. We will cover real-world use cases that demonstrate capabilities to help resolve day-to-day incidents and facilitate capacity planning efforts. We will show how metrics can be customized to align with different use cases, and visualized for easy consumption. We will also walk through how VMware uses automation to ensure 350+ vCenters are monitored consistently.

VMware IT supports a diverse set of applications, environments, technology platforms, and custom applications. This complexity is compounded by the numerous custom applications that our developers must create, and the many associated change requests related to design, log aggregation, and configuration monitoring. To address this, IT created the Chief Digital Transformation Office (CDTO) Modern App Platform (MAP), powered by the VMware Tanzu portfolio, a suite of VMware products. In this session learn how MAP enables developers to rapidly develop, deploy and manage modern applications.

WAN has become a barrier, and a big one. Discover how VMware IT took its first steps into VMware SD-WAN. We will discuss real-life use cases on how we replaced edge routers, increased performance for end users, brought a new WAN standard to branch offices, and simplified our quality of service (QoS) polices. We will also showcase our currently deployed architecture and VMware IT’s roadmap for the future. This presentation will include an introduction to VMware SD-WAN, and the problems VMware IT was trying to solve, figuring out what SD-WAN is not—and how VMware IT planned for that, as well as challenges VMware faced (and you can avoid). Finally, we’ll cover planning, migration, tips and lessons learned for migrations completed by VMware IT.

Global events, combined with advances in technology, have accelerated the adoption of virtual reality (VR) within the enterprise workplace. In this session we will share how our Virtual Reality at Work service initiative is ideal for enabling cross-functional teams that spend hours a day on video calls, streamlining global review/approval processes, enhancing worker productivity, and allowing more dynamic and immersive presentations/events/live experiences. There are a variety of other applications as well, including field sales enablement, remote training and development, 3D modeling and design functions, and even wellness programs. The service augments existing enterprise functions and expands its capabilities by eliminating any physical limitations.
