What Is Included in vSphere Integrated Containers 

vSphere Integrated Containers includes the following three major components that enables VMware customers to deliver a production-ready enterprise container solution to their development teams. By leveraging their existing SDDC, customers can run container-based applications alongside existing virtual machine based workloads in production without having to build out a separate, specialized container infrastructure stack.

  • vSphere Integrated Container Engine  - Docker Remote API-compatible engine deeply integrated into vSphere (6.0, 6.5, 6.7) for instantiating container images that are run as VMs with support for distributing images to remote offices/branch offices.
  • Container Management Portal  - Portal for apps teams to manage the container repositories, images, hosts, and running container instances. RBAC with support for LDAP/AD.
  • Container Registry - Securely stores container images with built-in RBAC and image replication. Provides vulnerability scanning, content trust with security policies. Supports 3rd party registries.

Project Harbor


Enterprise container registry that stores and distributes container images. Harbor extends the Docker Distribution open source project by adding the functionalities usually required by an enterprise, such as security, identity and management.

Project Admiral


Management portal that provides a UI for dev teams to provision and manage containers. Cloud administrators can manage container hosts and apply governance to their usage, including capacity quotas and approval workflows. vSphere Integrated Containers

What is vSphere Integrated Containers?

vSphere Integrated Containers is a vSphere feature that allows VI admins to create container hosts that are deeply integrated with vSphere. Once provisioned by the VI admin, developers are able to use the Docker CLI and API to run images in secure Container VMs. This gives developers self-service capabilities while at the same time allowing VI admins to control resource allocation. Since vSphere Integrated Containers uses native vSphere constructs, it allows you to leverage your existing infrastructure, tooling, policies and processes to manage containerized applications.

Which versions of vSphere support vSphere Integrated Containers?

vSphere Integrated Containers is supported by vSphere 6.0 and above.

Does vSphere Integrated Containers support multi-tenancy?

Yes. Every Virtual Container Host can be backed by a resource pool thus creating a boundary to separate your tenants.  

Does vSphere Integrated Containers support image signing and vulnerability scanning?

Yes. With vSphere Integrated Containers you can sign and verify the signature of images, scan images for vulnerabilities, and restrict the use of images based on their signature and vulnerability scanning status.

How do I purchase vSphere Integrated Containers?

vSphere Integrated Containers is available to all vSphere 6.0 and above Enterprise Plus customers. There is no additional license subscription required to use vSphere Integrated Containers. You can download it from myvmware.com

What kind of technical support is available for VMware vSphere Integrated Containers?
