A materiality assessment offers a holistic view of how issues, goals and outcomes can impact a business. By aligning all our priorities—both business and ESG—at VMware we made an important shift in how we plan and operate, which is driving meaningful change internally and externally. We performed our most recent materiality assessment in 2019 with a comprehensive review of our stakeholder ecosystem. We conducted a thorough analysis of industry trends and peer benchmarking, reviewed investor inquiries and customer insights, and received input from external IT sector experts and internal contributors. We prioritized topics based on their potential impact to our core business—whether financial, reputational or market-based—and how those topics impact our key stakeholders’ decision-making. We also considered the potential outcomes we could accelerate with these material issues, which ultimately helped inform our ESG Strategy.
New and emerging privacy and security legislation place specific regulatory obligations on organizations, while cyberattacks are rapidly growing in sophistication and scope. At VMware we are passionate about privacy and data security and have developed comprehensive procedures and controls to help protect our customers and their infrastructures and our own.
A culture of ethical conduct and compliance is key to maintaining a sustainable and responsible business. This culture is core to VMware’s commitment to integrity which underpins our Business Conduct Guidelines. These guidelines specify standards of behavior that go beyond just complying with the law. They require all employees, directors and executive officers of VMware and its subsidiaries to uphold our shared corporate values: to build and protect trusted relationships with customers, partners, shareholders and the communities within which we operate.
We all share a role in the global fight against bribery and corruption. To help protect against these threats, we’ve established an anti-corruption program that outlines policies, programs, training, and risk and control evaluation centered around embedding anti-bribery management into every facet of our business. We leverage risk assessments to drive process and control refinement, identify targeted training opportunities, and implement program enhancements, where necessary. In 2019 we launched a compliance campaign titled "We All Own It," focused on driving accountability for ethics and compliance issues at a personal level.
Our Government Relations and Policy team partners with governments and public officials to champion our technologies, products and services, customers, employees, and our global communities. We work with all levels of government on public policies relevant to our core business and core values, and we partner with trade associations and industry organizations that share our vision and policy objectives.
VMware also works with United By Interest (UBI), the first bipartisan, majority-minority owned government relations team in Washington, D.C. UBI helps enhance VMware’s outreach to key members the Congressional Black Caucus and Congressional Hispanic Caucus on issues around social and racial justice.
Sustainability is core to our values and future success. We have a legacy of enabling positive environmental impact through our technology solutions and we continue to enable decarbonization of digital infrastructure across our customer ecosystem, value chain and our own operations. VMware has been a certified CarbonNeutral® Company since 2018; our operations have been powered 100% by renewable energy since 2019.Through our collective efforts to drive toward net zero emissions in our operations and sustainability in our product solutions, VMware will inspire the next generation of sustainable digital infrastructure.

VMware helps customers like WVV build the IT infrastructure for tomorrow’s smart cities.
In 2020, we assessed—for the first time—the carbon impact of VMware employees working from home. We were motivated by the opportunity to devise a custom methodology for home-office emissions.
VMware Zero Carbon Committed builds on our history of helping customers reduce the environmental impact of their digital operations through more efficient and productive use of IT infrastructure. The initiative also extends our reach and impact alongside our public cloud partners.
Sustainability is something many of us aspire to practice every day. But there is something about the seasons changing to Spring and the annual Earth Day celebrations that give us a chance to pause and think consciously about what more we can do.

VMware solutions enable Zoom to build trust with users by offering a secure, scalable solution in a pandemic environment with employees all over the world.
Reflections on the development of VMware’s ESG strategy from Nicola Acutt, Vice President, Environmental, Social and Governance at VMware.
In VMware's 2021 Cybersecurity Outlook, we found that the threat landscape was refigured by the pandemic for many security teams. Here are some best practices for CISOs and security teams looking to fight back in 2021.
To address the changing threat landscape, VMware is redefining security to help organizations better protect all control points and simplify Zero-Trust security.
VMware is committed to delivering cloud-native technology to its customers to provide security across environments and devices. We are thrilled to announce that VMware Carbon Black Cloud has been named a Leader in The Forrester Wave™: Endpoint Security Software As A Service, Q2 2021.
We believe that transparency is crucial to achieving our ambitious 2030 Agenda and keeping ourselves accountable, which is why we routinely share our progress across our 2030 goals.
We also regularly respond to investor requests for information and industry leading ESG assessments. These include the Carbon Disclosure Project (CDP) to measure our environmental sustainability performance, EcoVadis to evaluate our sustainable procurement practices, and S&P Global’s Corporate Sustainability Assessment (CSA) to measure our overall ESG performance and evaluate inclusion in the Dow Jones Sustainability Indices (DJSI).
VMware has a long history of leveraging data to improve our decision making and capacity for innovation. We have transparently shared our ESG performance since VMware’s inaugural ESG Report in 2015.
We measure our impact in line with leading ESG frameworks including the Global Reporting Initiative (GRI), Sustainable Accounting Standards Board (SASB), Task Force on Climate-related Financial Disclosures (TCFD), Principles of the United Nations Global Compact (UNGC), and United Nations Sustainable Development Goals (UN SDGs).

Engagement with supply chain on climate issues | VMware's supply chain consists of approximately 8,500 total suppliers with approximately 250 of those being our top suppliers (by spend). In 2019, for the second consecutive year, VMware requested data from our top suppliers via CDP Supply Chain. Our supplier participation doubled and we continue to engage our suppliers on their sustainability journeys. | We engage with approximately 250 suppliers each year on the CDP Supply Chain platform to understand our supplier base climate maturity. These suppliers represent roughly 75% of our procurement spend and about 61% of total scope 3 emissions in FY21. At the end of 2020, we launched our Responsible Sourcing Program to deepen our supplier engagement. | GRI 102-9, 308-1 Principle 8 |
Science-Based Target: VMware commits that 75% of its suppliers by spend (approximately 250 suppliers) covering purchased goods and services, capital goods, upstream leased assets and upstream transportation and distribution will have science-based targets by FY2025 | 24% of our suppliers have set or committed to science-based targets as of FY21. | GRI 102-9, 308-1 Principle 8 |
