Net Zero Commitments
Net zero means taking responsibility for our entire carbon footprint. We extend that responsibility from the suppliers we work with to the solutions we build. We are committed to achieving absolute reductions and mitigating residual emissions with carbon avoidance and removal projects. VMware’s emission reduction goals validated by the Science-Based Targets Initiative (SBTi) provide the foundation for our journey to net zero and include:
- Reducing Scope 1 and 2 emissions 50 percent by 2030
- Reducing employee commute and fuel and energy-related emissions 50 percent by 2030
- Engaging 75 percent of our suppliers (by spend) to set their own science-based targets by 2025

Driving Operational Efficiency
VMware incorporates emissions reductions into our daily business operations by improving the resource efficiency and resiliency of our buildings and data centers. We are committed to green buildings and have achieved LEED certification for 20 of our sites globally.

Procuring 100% Renewable Energy
Reducing our overall demand for electricity is an essential part of our net zero strategy. We source 100 percent of electricity in our global facilities and collocated data centers from renewable sources.
- 100 percent renewable energy powered operations since 2019
- Signatory to RE100, a global collaborative representing businesses committed to using 100 percent renewable electricity in partnership with the Climate Group and CDP
- In partnership with the Clean Energy Buyers Association, we provide publicly available renewable energy strategy 101 training

Mitigating Residual Emissions
VMware is proud to be a Certified CarbonNeutral® company since 2018, and we are committed to maximizing decarbonization across our entire value chain on the path to net zero by 2030. We support low-carbon sustainable development projects with potential for systemic impact and intersection benefits for communities.
As part of our net zero strategy, we have also committed to conserve, restore and plant one million tress by 2030 in partnership with 1t.org. Through the end of FY23, VMware has funded the planting of more than 400,000 trees.
