Research Programs
Inventing the Future Together
VMware Research and the Academic Program bring university researchers and industry researchers together to push the boundaries of technology and solve some of the toughest challenges in computing. We are interested in extraordinary ideas, and how to build tomorrow’s transformative technologies today.
VMware Research
VMware Research is VMware’s flagship research organization tackling projects that advance our fundamental understanding of computer science, and exploring new technology types and applications. Some current areas of work include innovations in platform architecture and operating systems, research issues in storage, reliability, and security of distributed systems, and new approaches for probabilistic analysis, optimization, and randomization.

Research Center Partnerships
VMware sponsors and collaborates with a number of academic research centers both in the U.S. and internationally. Our collaborations bring together leading academic researchers across a number of fields, and technical staff across VMware, to jointly envision and explore the future of computing. Some recent center partnerships include:
- Stanford Platform Lab.
- UC Berkeley RISE Lab.
- ETH Zürich Systems Group.
- CMU Parallel Data Lab.
- Stanford Secure Internet of Things Project.
- UC Berkeley SPAN (Software Principles for Advanced Networking).
- IC3: Initiative for CryptoCurrencies and Contracts.
- UW Computer Systems Lab.
- Georgia Tech Center for Experimental Research in Computer Systems.
- Stanford DAWN.
Government Partnerships
VMware partners with government agencies on occasion to develop innovative research challenges and co-sponsor academic research in areas of national significance. One recent collaboration is the NSF/VMware Partnership on Software Defined Infrastructure as a Foundation for Clean-Slate Computing Security (SDI-CSCS). This 3-year, $6M academic research program is in collaboration with the U.S. National Science Foundation, a well-known federal funding agency in science and engineering.
In February 2018, VMware and the U.S. National Science Foundation announced their second joint $6M solicitation of research proposals, due by May 22, 2018, entitled “NSF / VMware Partnership on Edge Computing Data Infrastructure (ECDI)”. Full details can be found here.
