VMware Player is free for personal non-commercial use. If you would like to learn about Virtual Machines or use them at home you are welcome to use VMware Player for Free. Students and Faculty of accredited educational institutions can use VMware Player for free if they are members of the VMware Academic Program.

Per-incident support offerings are available to VMware Player Plus customers.

VMware Player Plus Purchasing & Licensing FAQs

Yes. The price of VMware Player Plus includes an update service that entitles you to product updates and patches, which are new releases of Player Plus within a given product version (e.g. x.1, and x.1.1, and so forth). Updates are available in electronic format only—not physical media. VMware Player Plus will automatically download updates or you may download updates by visiting the Player Plus Download Page. NOTE: The price of Player Plus entitles a customer to free updates, but not free upgrades. Upgrade releases contain functional enhancements or significant extensions and must be purchased separately unless you have an active support and subscription (SnS) contract.

Yes. You can switch between Windows and Linux versions of VMware Player Plus using the same license key. If you decide to switch host operating systems, you must uninstall Player Plus from the host operating system you no longer plan to use. If you plan to run VMware Player Plus on both a Linux and Windows host at the same time, you need to purchase two licenses.

Yes, you can commercially use the copy of VMware Player Plus that comes with VMware Workstation. It must be run on the same machine VMware Workstation is installed on.

No. VMware Player is not designed to co-install with other VMware products. If an installation of VMware Workstation or VMware Server is detected on a machine where VMware Player is being installed, the VMware Player installation will display an error message and abort. However, if you purchase and install VMware Workstation a version of VMware Player that will work is included.
