Desktop virtualization is a software technology that allows you to run end user desktops inside a data center - yours or a public cloud provider's - and view those desktops and/or applications on remote endpoint devices.

The primary benefits of Desktop Virtualization are the following:

Desktop Virtualization is when a desktop is virtualized in a datacenter and rendered on a client device. Virtual Desktop Infrastructure is the software and hardware required to do that.

Virtualization platforms like VMware Horizon leverage an underlying server and hypervisor build and manage many desktop virtual machines (VMs) .

These platforms also provide additional desktop tools and infrastructure that allows admins to configure these VMs into pools while managing the  apps, personalization, policies and other content that makes up the desktop experience.

End-users launch a VDI client app or a web page to securely connect and log-in to these virtual desktop machines.  A set of secure gateways and a brokering and entitlement system grant users access to the right resources.

App Virtualization leverages Remote Desktop Services (RDS) technology to publish and run applications in the data center, sharing those apps to multiple users who view the application remotely on their endpoint device. App virtualization focuses on delivering just an individual application or set of apps, while virtual desktops provide the complete desktop experience for launching and working with multiple applications simultaneously in the same workspace.
