IDC: Virtualization Delivers Energy and Carbon Emissions Reductions

On Day One of VMworld Europe 2016, VMware CEO Pat Gelsinger cited an independent study from IDC showing that over the past 13 years, VMware Virtualization technology has avoided 603 million megawatt hours (Mwh) of power consumption or 339 million metric tons of CO2 emissions. To put those numbers into perspective, the collective impact of this avoidance is equivalent to the power consumed by 43% of U.S. households for one year (during 2015 per U.S. Census data). According to IDC, “the savings from virtualization software is magnitudes of order beyond what can be delivered by incremental improvements in efficiency that come from more efficient processors, more efficient power supplies, or a move from spinning media to solid state storage.” Read the full IDC White Paper.
