Breaking: VMware Announces Intent to Acquire Heptio to Drive Kubernetes Across Multiple Clouds
In the last year, we have advanced our cloud strategy to enable our customers with the best infrastructure that can span multiple clouds. That strategy was reinforced with our recent acquisition of CloudHealth Technologies, which we announced during VMworld 2018 US in August. Customers that rely on AWS, Microsoft Azure and Google Cloud can leverage CloudHealth Technologies as a cloud operations platform across multiple public and private clouds.
Following Pat’s announcement earlier on stage at VMworld 2018 Europe in Barcelona, I am proud to unveil the next exciting milestone in our acquisition journey – our intent to acquire Heptio, a leader in the open Kubernetes ecosystem. You can learn more about Heptio in our press release. This is an exciting step for us not just in advancing our commitment to Kubernetes, but also in driving our commitment to supporting open source technologies and making them operationally ready for customers.
As customers plan their strategy for modern multi-cloud and cloud native applications, Kubernetes has emerged as the standard in container orchestration. In 2018, in partnership with Pivotal, we delivered VMware PKS and VMware Cloud PKS (formerly VKE) to build a Kubernetes portfolio and help customers run these apps in a cloud-agnostic manner. Heptio products and expertise are applicable across the entire VMware multi-cloud portfolio and will extend this foundation through a set of valuable Kubernetes enterprise services. In addition to applicability to enterprise customers, I’m personally excited as GM of our Telco business at the prospect of bringing Heptio to help Communication Service Providers (CSPs) with their containerized network functions and applications.
We expect to add Heptio’s software best practices and expertise to VMware’s Cloud Native Apps business unit to help our customers simplify their adoption and operation of Kubernetes in production. With the addition of Heptio, VMware will be better positioned to guide our customers as they transition to a multi-cloud era.
As I have mentioned before, our M&A strategy at VMware is focused on supporting the efforts of our world class R&D team with the right blend of inorganic technologies and talent. Heptio’s open source and Kubernetes expertise will help accelerate our cloud native efforts for our customers after closing, and continue to benefit the overall Kubernetes community. I’m looking forward to Heptio joining VMware.
