The Internet of Things (IoT) is one of the hottest topics in the technology sector, and with good reason. It influences the interaction of technological, economic, social, societal, and individual changes, and analysts and market researchers estimate that by the year 2020, at least 20 billion devices will be connected. But with these devices come many questions: How do we secure all these devices? How do we successfully implement IoT projects?
To get a clearer picture of how the industry is evolving, VMware and other leading technology companies teamed up with IDG Research Services to examine the role of CIOs and IT in the future of IoT. The “IDG Research Services Study: Internet of Things 2016” report, based on a survey of top IT decision-managers from Germany, Austria, and Switzerland, gives new insights on how IoT is being used across multiple industries.
The study reveals that companies, while still struggling to find the best path for data protection and privacy, recognize the growing importance of IoT. Currently, only 45 percent of companies say IoT is highly relevant for them. However, when looking ahead, 72 percent expect IoT to become important or very important over the next two to three years.
