Mobile Payments Sparking a Much Larger Industry Revolution

Mobile payment systems will be fighting for attention at this week’s Mobile World Congress in Barcelona, the world’s biggest mobile communications show. And as such, large players like Samsung, Visa and MasterCard are expected to hold mobile-payment-related events. With so many different payment systems competing for a spot in our digital wallet, which one will become the standard?

Sanjay Poonen, EVP and GM of End-User Computing at VMware, believes the answer can be found in his company’s success in the enterprise computing business. Poonen writes the payments industry is undergoing a technology revolution similar to that of the Internet in the 1990s. The winning payment system will require the same elements that VMware used: careful choice of top-tier companies as strategic partners and making sure the technologies provide a seamless merchant and consumer experience.

This industry is not the only one undergoing a significant transformation to the mobile world. It’s merely one of several categories in the middle of a revolution that’s entirely changing the way businesses and consumers interact and communicate. Over the coming years, it will become nearly impossible to not see the impact this transformation is making to our personal and work lives in nearly every aspect.
